He's in the kitchen making coffee.

Where did this come from?
-He said I could use it.

-He's been helping me with a project for school.
-[ Chuckles ] -It's our favorite pets.
-Who's this?
-Elliot when he was my age.

-He was born in Ireland.
Then they came here to live on a farm.
Vista was his dad's sheepdog.
Whose is that?

Oh, I found it in the wardrobe.
-You can't just make yourself at home.
-[ Laughs ] Little smart-ass.
[ Kisses forehead ] [ TV chatter continues ] -Good morning.
-Morning.

Wasn't sure if it broke one of Simone's employer-employee protocol things.
I don't really want to be around when she finds out what happened last night.

-Giving Liam his first lesson in foraging.

-Keep spoiling me, I'm definitely gonna get used to it.
[ Glasses clink ] Where's Liam?
-Looking at the old Land Rover in the garage.
I'll get dinner started.
-You know you don't have to sleep on that pull-out thing unless you're... having second thoughts.

-I just don't wanna ruin this by rushing things.
-[ Laughs ] So hiring me out of the blue, bringing me all the way out here, that's your idea of taking things slowly, is it?

I reckon Liam will be busy with that car for at least 20 minutes.

[ Dog panting ] Good boy.

-My ankle.
[ Rachel sighs ] Mum, look.

-Brandy and Whiskey.
Rubbish names, I know.
They loved this place.
Made sense to bury them here.
-At the same time?
-No, years apart.
They were inseparable.
Thought they'd want to be together.

-Okay.

-Who owns the dog I saw?
-Whoever you saw walking earlier, maybe.
-Was that one a puppy?

No, just little and very old.
-Think you can walk back?

I do worry about him, though.
You know, how much time he spends in his own little world.

-A couple of years.
Long enough.

I guess I don't trust myself anymore... not to make the same mistake again.
Anyway, enough about me.

-What do you want to know?
-The fire.
When you were a little boy... What happened?
-I told you.
-No, not really.
I'm sorry.

[ Sighs ] Growing up, I was a bit of a loner.
Just me and my parents.
And about a hundred sheep.
People used to say... they couldn't see what my mum saw in my dad.
[ Child laughing ] She was a bit of a big deal when we were farming.
In the village, they used to always say that... ...she'd settled for less by marrying him.
But for a while, things were good between them.
Then the fights started.
And the fights got more often.
My dad drank and... [ Ominous music plays ] ...when he drank, he got angry.
[ Dad screaming ] One day, I came home from school early, and I heard my mum talking on the phone.
Talking about all the things she regretted... making plans about leaving him.
Moving back to Ireland and starting again.
About a week later...
I found her packing.
And I couldn't understand what was happening... why she hadn't told me that we were leaving.
Then it hit me.
I wasn't.
I was one of her regrets.
I pleaded with her, I begged her not to leave, but it made no difference.
She was gonna start again... somewhere new... without me .
[ Melancholy music plays ] And that's when my dad got back.
When he realized what was happening, something snapped in him.
He forced us into a bedroom.
He locked the door, and my mother was screaming.
And the next thing, he was pouring something over the door, over the hallway... all around the house.
[ Match strikes, flames whooshing ] And that's when I heard it.
In seconds, the whole house was up in flames.
I remember the smoke, the heat.
My mother screaming for me to do something.
So I broke the bedroom window.
Managed to open it a crack, and I crawled through.
I pleaded with my mum to come with me, but... the window was jammed, and there was no way she was gonna get through.
I can still see the panic in her eyes.
I thought that, if I could just get back inside, everything would be okay, that I could get her out.
But at that point, the building was in flames...
So I just stood there.
I listened to my mother screaming... ...until, eventually, it stopped.
♪♪ Afterwards... the newspapers called me a hero.
"The Boy Who Tried to Save His Mum."
But I wasn't a hero.
I was a coward.
-God, no.
-If I was brave, I would've saved her.
But instead, I let her die.
It's my fault.
♪♪ ♪♪ [ Wind blowing briskly ] [ Leaves rustling ] [ Tense music plays ] ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Elliot mumbling ] [ Elliot gasping ] [ Chain snaps ] ♪♪ [ Woman screaming ] ♪♪ [ Match strikes ] [ Elliot gasping ] [ Exhales sharply ] [ Exhales heavily ] [ Rachel yawning ] [ Birds chirping in distance ] [ Sighs ] Liam with you?
-I thought he was still in bed.
[ Foreboding music plays ] I'll check by the river.
-Okay.
Li?
♪♪ Liam!
♪♪ [ Door creaks open ] Liam?
♪♪ Liam!
♪♪ ♪♪ [ Twig snaps ] Liam?
[ Rachel sighs ] Liam, where have you been?
I was worried sick.
-You were asleep, so I went to explore.
-Look at you.
You're all wet.
-I slipped in the stream.
When I was on my way back, this woman came over.
-Woman?
What woman?
-Don't know.
She started asking my name, who we were, why we were here.
-Probably just a nosy neighbor.
-I said I had to get back.
-There you are.
Your mum was worried.
-Fell in a stream, numpty.
Go on inside and change before you catch your death.
-This is all I've got.
-You didn't pack anything?
-That's alright.
There's some of Alfie's stuff still in the drawer.
We'll find you something.
[ Ominous music plays ] ♪♪ -On holiday?
-Just a few days.
Came up yesterday.
-Ah, I thought you didn't sound like you're from round here.
-[ Chuckles ] -Mind you, I can talk.
Moved here from Manchester.
-Oh, you must love it.
-Don't know.
Bit boring, to be honest.
-[ Laughs ] -Where you staying?
-The house in the woods, by the river.
-The log cabin?
-That's right.
-Are you ready?
-I'm done.

[ Chatter on radio ] [ Car beeps ] -Mum, look what Elliot bought me from the secondhand shop.
It's an old SLR camera with a 50-millimeter lens and a built-in light meter.
-Wow.
You really didn't need to.
-It wasn't that much.
It'll be good for school projects.
Come on.
-Well, thank you -- again.
The woman in the shop asked where I was staying, went kind of weird when I told her.
Did something happen up there?
-There was an older house on the site when I bought it, and I knocked it down.
Maybe it was something to do with that.
When I was your age, my mum gave me a Minolta Maxxum 7000.
Quite a little camera.
I used to love going into the fields, trying to find creatures to photograph.
-Where does the picture come out?
-Oh, my word.
You've not taken a photo on a real camera before, have you?
To be fair, darling, I've not seen one myself in a while.
-Dying art, photography.
-A few of the girls at the cleaning agency fancy themselves as "influencers."
I think they'd argue with you on that.
-I'm not sure selfies count.
-[ Chuckles ] -See?

-I don't think it's working.
[ Puffing on cigarette ] [ Ominous music plays ] -What is it?

-I was researching the wildlife in this area on my phone on the way out, and, apparently, water fowls, otters, and hedgehogs are native to these woods.
-Oh, yeah?
-I'd love to see an otter.
Did you know otters hold hands when they sleep so they don't float away?
-I did hear that.
Maybe we'll see some back at the river.
Oh, look.
See, that's a little rabbit.

-Okay.

♪♪ [ Wind blowing briskly ] -Got these at that shop.

[ Birds calling ] You okay?
-It's nothing.

-I get like this when I have to go back.

I feel like I've stirred things up for you.
You know, talking about the fire.
-I'm glad you know.
-Breaks my heart, the thought of you going through that at the same age as Liam.
Who looked after you afterwards?
-I went into care for a while.
That didn't work out.
Ended in a boarding school back in Ireland.
I think that's why I built this place.
I wanted to live in the middle of nowhere again, like I was before.
[ Tense music plays ] I can trust you, can't I?
-Why do you ask?

-Of course.
[ Gate grinding ] ♪♪ -Good break?
-You can answer that.
-Amazing.
-Well, I hate to be the Grinch, but... there are quite a few matters requiring your attention.

I downloaded a video on sanding down the paint work.
-Absolutely.

I had a look through the footage from Rachel's flat.

[ Elliot slams folder close ] [ Elliot slams drawer closed ] You didn't tell me It wasn't her ex who smashed the place up.
It was two kids I've never seen before.
-He had someone do it for him so he wouldn't be recognized.
-You don't think we should tell the police?
-That we've been using illegal surveillance?
Anyway, I'm taking care of it.

-I'm asking Rachel to move in with me... permanently.
-What?
I've told you about her past.
She's completely unreliable.
-And I've told you I don't want to discuss it.

-When you met Rachel, you said you felt sorry for her.
Next thing I know, you're moving her in, you're asking me to set up a trust fund for her kid.

Elliot isn't who you think he is.

You met him once, maybe twice, and the next thing, you're moving in with him.

He's watching us right now.

[ Footsteps receding ] [ Door opens ] [ Engine rumbling ] [ Tires screech ] -Are you okay?
I came soon as I could.
-We need to talk... alone.
-That won't be necessary.
-Simone, will you just...off?!
-Where's Liam?
-In his room, packing.
We're leaving.
-What?
No...Ra-Rachel, listen -- -She said you'd been watching.
You've got cameras everywhere.
-[ Laughs ] Of course I've got security cameras.

Look, let's just sit down and talk about this rationally.
-She said she tried to leave and you hunted her down.
-The police tried to find her for her own safety, for Alfie's.
Olivia... wasn't well, okay?

And one day, she just disappeared.
Eventually, they tracked her down at the cabin.
She cut her wrists while Alfie was playing in the next room.
-That's what the woman in the shop was talking about.
-I'm sorry.

I was frightened you were gonna react like this.
Afterwards, Olivia was sectioned.
She still blames me for everything that happened.
And ever since, any time I've even thought about trying to see someone else, she turns up and she scares the...outta them, like this.
I had to get a restraining order.
You can ask Simone if you don't believe me.

I can't believe I put Liam and you in danger.
-I can look after Liam.
I've had enough practice.
-Look... if you want, I'll go somewhere else, just for a few nights, and you can stay here.
I'll put security on the gates, whatever you want.

I need to know you're safe until the police pick her up.

[ Rachel sighs ] God, I can't believe I've done this to him again.

-Yeah.

I mean, what she said about the flat being trashed, Jas, what if it wasn't Kieron?
-Yeah, but if she was really sectioned, he took a restraining order out, can you really trust anything she says?
[ Knock on door ] That'll be room service.
I thought you guys might be hungry.
-I'll get it.
There's no one there.
-What?

[ Jasmine scoffs ] -Right, I'll go down, find out who sent them.

[ Rachel sighs ] [ Tense music plays ] ♪♪ ♪♪ [ Elliot panting ] ♪♪ -[ Shakily ] Police.

M-My ex-wife, she broke into my home, and she attacked me... Tawny House, Shepperton Brook.
Please hurry, I'm bleeding!
