Learn Moreabout PBS online sponsorshipI wouldn't say that I'm a natural artist.
I'd say that I was always interested in art from an early age, probably elementary school.
But really, graffiti is what captivated me through, like, the skateboarding scene and hip hop.
My name is Hawk Sahlein.
I go by Elms One, and I am one of the founders of Sector Seventeen.
We primarily are a graffiti-based, aerosol realism collective of artists.
We've been doing this kind of work for 15-plus years, and full-time for about 10.
So we've worked in all sorts of places in Treasure Valley and around Idaho - all sorts of private, commercial, public commissions.
Down at the Rhodes Skate Park, the Record Exchange, up at Table Rock, all around the North End and in some smaller areas around Idaho.
Painting is just a never-ending game.
I mean, there’s no top goal to reach and then you're done.
There's no limiting yourself on what you can or can't do.
And there's no end to it, like, different combinations of things, components you can put on a wall or things you can say.
I feel like that keeps it fun for me.
When people interact with a mural that I've created, I just hope that they take a moment out of their normal routine and stop, maybe think about what it is that I was trying to communicate or even just draw their own conclusions.
If they can appreciate the message, that's cool.
If they can appreciate that actual art of it, that's cool.
Or if they can appreciate that that even exists in our city, that's cool.
So, really, if they're thinking about it at all, I'm happy.
