Bardem gave all the off season has been filled with distractions.
The redshirting of all-American Jeff McGinnis and the ongoing question of Gable's possible retirement.
But now the season is here, and Gable can concentrate on what he does best, coaching a talented Hawkeyes squad versus his in-state rivals, the Iowa State Cyclones, runners up in last year's NCAA tournament.
The Cyclones are led by defending national champ Chris Bowen of his opponent, two time NCAA champion Lincoln McElroy.
We're looking forward to it.
It's time to see where I am against the best.
It's, you know, to beat it, to be the man, you have to beat the man and people are doubting me, which is fine, which is the way I like it.
Every time I step on the mat, I like, well, it'll use that quote.
I feel like I am the man, whether I'm wrestling world champion or whether I'm wrestling someone who's never asked them before.
I think you have to have that confidence.
So strap it on.
It's another one of those big intrastate showdown between the fifth ranked Iowa State cyclones and the top ranked Iowa Hawkeyes.
Next, on college wrestling from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
Iowa Public Television Sports brings you the season debut of college wrestling as the Iowa State cyclones take on the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Hello, I'm Doug Brown.
I am here with Tim Johnson to begin the 21st season of college wrestling on Iowa public television.
Penn big meets this year and this one is an especially important one and for another reason, too, besides just its own importance.
It's the 100th meet ever held in Carver Hawkeye Arena in January of 1983.
The very first one was broadcast by Iowa Public Television.
It was Oklahoma against Iowa State.
That's a long time ago.
And it was a big time.
It was a big time.
It's a big time today, too, because this is the first time that these two teams have met before Christmas.
A real special celebration for Iowa and Iowa State and wrestling fans all over Iowa State against Iowa.
Well, Dan Cable's in the news again, but for a different reason this year.
Well, then cable's usually in the news because he's bumping on his opponents.
But now they're wondering whether this will be the last year.
Could this be his last hurrah at the University of Iowa?
And they're just wondering, because if it is, it'll be a different sport.
We're going to talk to him, by the way, at the intermission, Dan Gable will be talking about possible retirement.
Well, yes, Dan Gable will be.
But Dan Gable, as has a lot of people back this year, one of them that's not coming back is Jeff McGinnis.
He's going to redshirt.
But now the person that's coming back that everybody's excited about is that man right there, Lincoln McElroy.
The 150 pounder could be the best ever to put on the uniform at that weight.
He's back to try to win his third national title, but he's got a strong supporting cast behind him for that Iowa team, all Americans, all of Amana and Euchre, Williams, Ironside and Full Heart.
And he needs them.
This year against Iowa State more than ever, because we've talk about him a lot, you know, for promotional purposes.
But this year I think you believe in I believe and I know Bobby Douglas believes his team has turned the corner.
Well, anyone in the wrestling circles that doesn't believe that Bobby Douglas is the real deal hasn't paid attention to his career as an Olympian, as an athlete, a national champion coach at Arizona State before he came to Iowa State.
And look what he's building here.
Last year, runner up in the NCAA ways and he's got a good group of people coming back.
Led by Chris Bono, £150 national champion.
There he is hitting back there.
But he's not a Haydn kind of fella.
He's a guy that comes straight on because he's going against McIlroy.
Avery tonight there.
He has win in the NCAA last year and tonight it'll be McIlroy, maybe a national champion who won 52 times versus one time champion Bono.
And he's surrounded by a strong cast of characters as well to All-Americans coming back, Dwight Hanson at 126 and Barry Weldon at 177.
You know, Tim, one of the nice things about Iowa, Iowa State matches up on new people come along and all these good ones, what do they have to do?
How do they figure in the keys to the meet?
Well, the keys for me, I think there are several things.
And one of them is each team has some favorite weights, but there are some toss ups, about four toss ups that I see it.
I think Iowa State needs to win three of those concepts to be in this meet.
I also think they need to come out fast at 118 to 126 and I mean win.
Why do I say that?
Look where they're wrestling.
You are, Hawkeye.
This is the 100th match meet here at Carver Hockey and only one team has ever come in and left the victor.
You got to get out fast to beat the Hawkeyes.
All right, Now we're going to show you the lineup Chair as a rank.
We had some way in the duplications in a couple of weeks, but there you see the young man, 118, a fifth year senior against a freshman and two great ones at 26.
It's a possibility of Gillis or Coble against Maldonado 142 If you go into the upper weights, then from 158, you'll see that Iowa State weighed in.
Two men at 167, Bart Horton and a freshman named Perkins.
And I think you'll like if you got a chance to see him, two Iowa products he now can hand out heavyweight.
Yeah, we've got a lot of festivity here.
Iowa Iowa State is always festive the cheerleaders Herky.
And there's Keith Pullman Phish all that's been with us a lot of time.
Clarion native, former all-American at the University of Northern Iowa and always excited to see Keith out there and of course, Iowa public television always mix the official.
So you'll hear what that man right there, Keith Bowman, has to say and why he calls what he calls like.
Almost everything you hear him say once in a while, you know, in the heat of the battle as a coach or a wrestler or somebody might say something that, you know, I feel the heat of the battle.
But most of the time, it's a very, very I think educational they might say educational way of looking at a meet, because you find out what the official is telling the wrestlers that many fans upstairs might not know.
There is a young man you're seeing possibly for the first time from Iowa State.
He is a redshirt freshman at the beginning of a family of freshmen, turned out to be coming into Iowa State in the future.
One of the first of the Sanderson's this is Cody Sanderson against Jesse Witmer, a fifth year senior from Eagle Grove, Iowa.
And this is where we told you it has to start.
This is a big toss up match to begin this first Iowa State Iowa duel.
Cody Sanderson against Jesse Witmer.
Well, Jesse Witmer Hawkeye fans, No, but he's been a well kept secret outside of the Hawkeye family because of course, Mike McKenna has been at one eight team for the past three years.
And here's a fifth year senior in on the league trip right there, a single leg he's left well in with the Turk.
And it's two points for Wittmer over Sanderson.
Sanderson did a good job there of keeping Whitmer from being effective with that Turk going away.
A Turk on the way down, though, keeping him from a little more danger.
Well, you know, you look at these two men right away.
We've seen Jesse Whitmer, of course, in Iowa for a good long while.
You notice how much taller Cody Sanderson is right away.
You can see style differences, right?
Intrinsic.
And what, Just the way they look.
Yeah, he's a long one.
18 pounder.
And of course, you can see the starkness of Whitmer.
So contrast right there.
But Whitmer did a nice job.
He's explosive.
He got in and he's wrestling up by two.
This is the first period of three, the three minute first period, as you know, begins on the feet.
There's the escape for Sanderson, who makes it one point for him, two for Whitmer.
He gave away two points.
Whitmer gave two points, got two points to give away.
One Sanderson, you know, is new on the scene, redshirt freshman.
But he's not exactly untested and unproven because he placed third at Las Vegas.
Open the always tough Las Vegas open the early season tournament last year.
Last week.
There's takedown.
We're proud of him.
Perry made it look easy to see who pushed in on Sanderson very quickly and went up 4 to 1, I think perhaps to some Iowa State fans who have heard a lot about Sanderson, knowing that Whitmer has not been a regular in that lineup, they thought he might shoulder faster than this.
Well, that's like I said, Whitmer may be one of Iowa's well kept secrets.
He he finished third last year at the Always Tough Midlands beat David Morgan, a tough all-American from back at 118 last year.
And as you saw, he's explosive.
He's good from the top position two and four.
She hasn't showed yet.
4 to 2 now, two points for a takedown, one for an escape.
Remember that the advantage time on top, the position on top.
If one man at the end of the match has a minute more of writing time, our position and the position advantage, he gets a point.
So it's a latent point there for being on top.
There's a sweep single by Sanderson countered.
Can he score with it?
So come up with it position.
He waited too long there in that position.
Given Whitmer a chance to readjust, slip We have about 50 seconds left in the first period.
Now we're back in.
That must be a big takedown for Sanderson.
And he gets it.
Got the double?
No, not yet.
In the center.
And we're right on.
Who?
Whitmer has that double arm hook across there defending himself as they get near the out of bounds.
Sanderson still has his points in, so it's not out of bounds yet.
But there's experience of Whitmer there, knowing right where he's at and knowing that the referee is not called the two.
He's climbing on top.
He's keeping it tighten and come and look good on that.
In the end, because Whitmer proved him out that that was not two points.
You know, only had Bobby Douglas says he thought it was and maybe Dan Gable was agreeing that was a big, narrow victory.
Sanderson of Iowa State, the freshman against fifth year senior Keith Jesse Whitmer of Eagle Grove, Iowa.
Each of these men have brothers in the respective programs.
As a matter of fact, this is a John Wick right here to the end of the first period as an injury.
Time out now or equipment.
Time out, at least for Jesse Whitmer.
You're seeing Jim Zaleski there on the left.
Iowa State's seventh year assistant coach Jeff Allen, whose name, of course, comes up, as many people do, and you start thinking about whether Dan Gable is going to be here one year or two years or how many.
Well, that's the big question, of course, is whether or not he will be back next year.
And he says maybe, maybe not, but he'll never leave wrestling.
He's too big a man in the sport.
He's done so much for pickup.
Well, we haven't won 26 in this first meet of the year, Mike Bet against Dwight Henson.
And I know that Bobby Douglas with a little look a little worried there with his 118 pounder down 4 to 1 with the second period ready to go Four, two two.
As a matter of fact that's on Russell 42.
He's got it.
Sanderson had the choice.
I guess this will be interesting to see if Sanderson get out right away.
Whitmer, seasoned veteran.
Even though he hasn't been on the varsity, he's been in little room for five years on top there and a redshirt freshman.
It's always a suspect underneath when you're a young wrestler.
But he's out.
He got out after about 25 seconds.
So it's 4 to 3.
WHITMER by one.
Now you see Sanderson tying up with a two on one time taller, ran against the stocky Jesse Whitworth.
Both guys this year.
Senior, as I said, from Eagle Grill.
Well, Sanderson has good shot.
What he wants to do is he needs to take that shot after Whitmer, not allow Whitmer to have that explosiveness on him and take it to him.
Jeff Sanderson used a sweep single for his try in the first period, and Whitmer really came right at Sanderson.
As a matter of fact, he he scored there, or he's about to score.
He does score by attacking and building reaction time.
I think Whitmer is making a statement here early on for the meet Adams weight class for Iowa and answering a lot of questions right here, has an arm trapped right there, uses his hips well to take him down, takes away the power from Sanderson and gets the two points for his third takedown.
15 seconds to go, a 6 to 3 score.
Mitchell Sanderson is out, makes it 6 to 4.
And that's what Sanderson needs to do.
He just jumped right back in there.
And, you know, that's what that's what you need to do when you get let go like that.
You need to get right back in.
Get on it, need to come up right here.
Though he spent too much time on his knees.
Yeah, giving Whitmore a chance to counter No power.
No.
Yeah.
Right now he's trying to think about how can I get him on his back.
But really, what he was should be doing here in the second period is just scoring is his is takedown.
Trying to get the two points right here which he's going to right there makes it six six.
That says a lot about Sanderson right there.
We only have 10 seconds and less in the second period to right him out there to get he's back in the match.
That's sweep single.
That's the first time he was able to score his first takedown of the match.
And at six, six, at the end of the second period.
Now, of course, Whitmer is going to start on the bottom this time.
I hope it comes through that scramble from that shot.
And he's able to pop his head out this time and show the official that I have got control.
And that's two points, six, six.
So we're going to the third period here at £118.
Always important.
But I would say, especially in this meet Whitmer so well, but he does not have riding advantage and riding time advantage.
He's close 55 seconds with 55 seconds to go, 55 seconds advantage, 5 seconds to go.
It makes it all that more important for him if he can get another takedown.
Here comes Whitmer in a scramble, But two points there.
He's been able to work that against Sanderson twice as fit movement right there for Sanderson.
He just not as fast as I'm sure he's going to be later in the year.
The first time here at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
It's just trying to effect you, trying to get a tilt.
I guess I'm going to give it back.
He's.
He wrestles a hard paced match.
Both these wrestlers have a lot of guys.
I was out a minute 13 times on the match, 9 to 6 in favor of Iowa's Jessie Whitmer against Cody Sanderson.
Sanderson.
Here's a takedown right here.
And Sanderson tried to counter it, but it was too little, too late.
Two points.
Whitmer This fourth takedown out of the match.
That's right.
You've got to win the first period.
One on the second one here in all time.
Seven.
This is the most important takedown.
A great defense there, although he gets it two and now he's looking for back points to three.
Good finish here.
It is a good finish.
He's strong to the finish.
Jess Jesse Whitmer is 50 seconds to go.
Cat referee Keith Coleman was out there looking to see if there were any back points or not Up Well, the fifth year senior versus a redshirt freshman, Sanderson.
There's pretty good position there for a moment if he can get through that.
Not much time to come out of it, though.
With 30 seconds to go his given.
There are two points coming for a near fall exposure.
Three points makes it 14 to 7.
And that just about puts it away, I'd say for Whitmer.
How about look up?
That's a very impressive opening match for Jessie with great Run right now that's against a highly touted freshman, Cody Sanderson of Iowa State.
But after all, he is only a freshman.
There's a flag by Whitmer.
Whitmer loves it.
He loves this crowd.
He's saying, I want to be at 118 and I want to show you guys that I've waited a long time for this, and I'm going to take full advantage of it this year.
And that was important because it made a major decision this year, won by more than eight points with that last takedown.
And it makes it a takedown at the end that gave Iowa four points.
It's just kind of like Sanderson didn't know quite was there in the middle of that match there.
Oh, here we go at 126.
A lot of people looking forward to seeing this one.
Precisely what was going on back already.
Coming up later, Mike Matta ranked number four at 118.
Dwight Hinson ranked number four, currently at 126, both All-Americans beating at heavyweight 126.
I think there's a lot depends on how well Mike Matta does here against a somewhat bigger wrestler.
Well, somewhat, because you know, we're right into this year he was thinking about 134.
So he's cut down a weight lower than really we anticipated him to be at this year and Indiana's up from 118.
So it will be it'll be interesting, of course.
Hinson Coming off a runner up finish last year in the NCAA, and he's already crowned the Las Vegas champion at 126.
Well, these are the two of the best wrestlers at these weights in the country.
So what do you look for?
I know that Hinson is usually spare in his moves, but he's explosive when he makes them.
And better has been stronger than a lot of people at 118.
But can he do that at 126?
Yeah, he likes the horse.
And both of these guys are outstanding wrestlers.
They've got a lot they've got a lot of moves, but they do like to to hang out, so to speak.
Some they're very strong and solid wrestlers and not overly aggressive.
See how stable they are?
Yeah, they don't they don't they don't make mistakes.
They don't like to jump around doing weird things that are going to put them in trouble against a good man under them.
Each knows that the other man is good here, man.
As an active, good hand fighter, he's three time all-American and 118 for the Hawks.
Hinson went all the way to the final match last year against the man he had beaten earlier in the season, the number one ranked man from Clemson.
Mr. Thomas, Both these wrestlers would like to control the tie and work their short offense, meaning from close in.
Look at that nice man.
A touchdown on the leg.
He's got to lift it, though.
And good hip action by Hinson.
It's a little bit too strong in that position right there.
Hinson wants to keep menace from under hooking and blocking and tying up the risk right there.
Bama is particularly noted as a counter wrestler against when somebody comes at him on the legs.
Right?
Right.
And Hinson can hit those doubles hard if he chooses to.
So the strength against strength here fits best.
When I listen to Bobby Douglas talk to Dan Gable, I know especially you hear it from Bobby Douglas, the importance of the tie right there.
And what are they Do they got it in there on the collar, tie their arms, controlling the arms.
Bobby Douglas says if you don't control that tie, you can't score.
And he's just been warned.
Hence, Hinson has just been warned for inactivity.
Timeout moves.
The only offensive shot was taken by Madam High a few three minute first period is all but 30 seconds gone.
That's Bobby Douglas.
A lot of respect for each other.
The wrestlers out there on the mat going out tonight and written two books very well known in the wrestling community on The Art of the Takedown.
Now, that's why Harold Nichols brought him to Iowa State to do some graduate work back in a late sixties, early seventies, because he said, I want to get better on the feet.
So we brought the master because we know Harold Nichols always was a pinner because he had Dan Gable doing it now with Bobby Douglas in and and he says, We got to get better on the feet.
Mike in the black from Iowa it's the 100th wrestling meet You got a warning.
Oh yeah there's an even up warning from Keith Coleman with 2 seconds left in the first period, each man, a second one shot.
Neither man has scored, time has run up.
We'll go to the second period and the toss of the coin.
It goes to Henson.
Henson got his choice.
There's Tom Brandes here.
Both guys been warned or is it Terry?
That's Terry.
That's Terry Bradshaw.
Soon as I said it, I thought you said quickly, guys.
That's Terry, right.
I think you'll forgive me for not coming out the way Henson chooses down the bottom, man.
A lot of man.
Henson move too fast.
These two wrestlers, like I said, they're very sound.
They're very, very talented wrestlers.
They could really give us some excitement if they decided to open up.
But unfortunately, they they're not overly aggressive, as I said, and they don't like to make mistakes.
But wow, could that could could they give us some flurries if they decided open up?
Man knows that Henson is bigger than he is, but he came into this at £126 against a man who's come down for 134 very, very confident.
And you can see it not a look of a man who's nervous.
No, no.
And he has always been a very confident wrestler and and he's always known he's stronger than the other guys.
And this time it's a little different.
And he still has that look.
So he's a confident wrestler.
He's always out on the mat to win.
Takes Henson back to the mat.
Henson's having trouble getting away from Anna certainly the favored wrestler here is Henson being the runner up at this weight has had control now it is an escape for Henson one nothing.
The Iowa State Cyclones, the Hawks lead poor to nothing at the end of the first match 118 one impressively by Jessie Wittmer over Cody Sanderson you're just joining us.
Earliest we've ever come on with Iowa Public televisions college wrestling.
Nick.
14th of December in Iowa City, Iowa and Iowa State.
Oh, we have an Illinois native against an Oklahoma native here, both coming into Iowa from outside, of course, Mike Bennett from Rock Falls, Illinois, wrestled at Newman Central Catholic and four time state champion in Illinois.
Prior to his Hawkeyes career.
And then, of course, Dwight Mason from Oklahoma.
Each man has made one shot in the first period, and I suspect that Keith Poole will be getting a little answer here in a moment.
If somebody does not offer some kind of an attempt at scoring out, they're just hand fighting as it stands right now.
And you can see that back here, guys.
And Henson, for instance, is not going for the collar tie up there.
They're just tackling hands and staying inside each other with about 18 seconds to go in the second period, one to nothing in favor of Henson.
Now extend and white collar tie for Henson but they're not shooting right they went a whole period without it I was like I'll tell you it's going to there's a guy the menace there always supportive always at the match to watch their son Of course a time out by Henson is not a popular thing in Carver hockey they they're thinking all kinds of things except he's injured and one to nothing in favor of Henson going into the last 2 minutes.
Of course, there's no such thing as a tie anymore because we have overtimes and I think everybody's happy about one of the greatest moves.
Just like in football this past year, one of the greatest moves in the sport.
When we go to sudden victory and you get a settle it on the mat, you don't have a tie.
You know, Dwight Henson won the Las Vegas Open.
He won the St Louis Open.
He's already beaten the number one ranked man at £126.
He beat Vietnam, Wisconsin in an overtime man.
Now, the Iowa crowd says man has got to get out and score on the feet.
No riding time advantage.
Freedom and Manna is out.
It's one one.
It only took 4 seconds for Manning to get up, get a hand control, get his hips out and escape for the one one tie.
All right.
It's going to have to happen here.
So that's what if you miss underneath like that, do you have to react and get back as Henson just did?
Because Matt is, as you say, high up almost legendary for his ability to counter mistake shots at the legs in action.
Here go that's how you got it.
And right now Henson has the kind of talent and the soundness and technique to jump right back in on the legs but didn't quite get in there.
There's Tom Brand saying, Come on, let's go.
It's a very important match for both these wrestlers, but men in a different way because it will help decide where he's comfortable.
Can he can he go against the best at 126 if he can stay comfortable here, although he says he'd like to go back down to 118 as well.
But from a team standpoint, there's a shot for that matter, which does not hold.
He went for the legs, but of course that's going to put the requirement on Henson to shoot too.
What you just did sort of even things up in the mind of the referee.
We're in the last minute now.
50 seconds to go.
I know the Dwight Henson felt that if he had to go to the leg attack rather than an upper body attack, it would be a disadvantage for him.
He'd certainly like to get into a bear hug situation or something because Henson is known to be very lethal when he's inside and got a bear hug.
But he hasn't been able to get inside.
And Men has done a good job of hand fighting.
Keeping him away now.
Okay, guys, here we go.
He's a menace, limited in his ways.
He can score.
He doesn't have a great offense, but he's good from short offense.
And we've seen him keep Henson from getting inside.
10 seconds to go.
We're looking more and more like an overtime here.
Like that.
Iowa leads four to nothing after the first wait and Henson and Manna are going to go two in overtime, 2 minutes to go all the first fantasy gore now Yeah yeah we won't talk about what happens if they still are tied here.
Oh yeah.
Till we get to it.
But that's the way we go overtime, 2 minutes, whoever scores wins.
The boos was because Henson asked to get wiped off and then he kind of took his time getting his knee pad up there.
And the fans, the Partizan fans didn't like that.
And the says sudden victory sudden means now the fingers tap more technique.
Here we go overtime at Carver Hawkeye at £126 between Dwight Henson in the red of Iowa State and the familiar black of the national champion Iowa Hawkeyes Mike better don't see any differences.
This actually is where I want it to be.
It's going to be separated, but somebody has to score.
Yep.
We're two minute 20 before we get to that second part overtime, 811 and 115 to go in this overtime period.
There you go, guy.
We've got a sudden death over Rideout Actually, it's the rodeo.
You know, when you get to the second overtime, we'll explain it to you and when we get there, man has made two leg drops, although they're not really very penetrating.
Henson has not scored.
He's trying to get the bear hug.
You can see it kind of movement, chest to chest, but that's about an impossibility.
Either way.
I set him up.
There we go, guys.
Action.
This is a big match for Iowa State.
Henson needs to pull it out first for the team right here.
It needs to really get in there and go because lose this in Iowa State's in trouble.
30 seconds to go.
Henson is frustrated that he's not getting it set up and then he feels is not being chastised for staying in a stable position without trying to make really any offering to strong moves either.
But you can't referee the match and wrestle it at the same time.
You got 9 seconds to go.
Coming close to the flip of the coin here for who's up and who's down for that 32nd Bronco ride.
And then you got with these two, it's whoever wins the total, the flip record.
All right, who wins the toss picks up or down.
And I guess if he's going to pick down, it's when he's out in 30 seconds.
If he's out in 30 seconds, he wins.
Got it.
Okay, here we go.
Henson has to hold him for 30 seconds as he holds it for 30 seconds.
He ran and Henson asked the timeout and Dan Gable very gingerly moving around on that game hip.
He has not pleased with it.
You can wipe it off.
Look, you're going to run.
There's no job there.
Right there.
Yeah.
Andy, Tamara Keith.
Paul was talking to Bobby Douglas, Dwight Henson.
And the crowd is extraordinarily disturbed about this little time out.
The eyes on.
You know, we heard that last year, didn't we?
That in the research that was done, it indicates that the bottom man right.
It's about 5050 but it maybe against the really good wrestlers.
It's true every Chuck Bone or John Hughes had four overtime matches, double overtimes and whoever was on the bottom one.
So Henson has to hold him for 30 seconds or better, has to be held to get out 30 seconds.
And Henson is just not able to hold.
Wow.
That's out to the line.
A big victory for Mike Miller in a double overtime.
He's a lot right there.
He didn't just use a stand up.
He looked to the set in the turn and he got the leg.
He kept coming in, crowded the hips and got out.
Good escape.
And that makes it Cyrus Gable.
He's not showing any signs of slowing down as he does.
Oh, he sure isn't.
Now, when he wins those now, those were, as we were saying, were the first two match weights that were very important because they were toss ups.
They really were they were toss ups.
We thought more and Iowa won them both.
Gets them going here.
Carver Hawkeye, this guy, he doesn't need any more getting, getting going.
I'll tell you what, this one emotion.
Mark Ironside ranked second in the country.
It was a Big Ten champion.
The Midlands champion last year finished third in the NCAA.
He's up against a freshman from Osage, Iowa, named Frank Kingsley.
Never won a state championship.
Frank He's been asked to fill in this weight, £134.
One of the prospects for Iowa State not in there at this point.
The lineup may change a little bit.
You may tart as hell you might see Hinson up here.
It's possible.
But Frank Kingsley is going after Mark Ironside and Ironside, the junior from Cedar Rapids.
Jeff, much stronger than Gable says, than last year and stronger from than from the year before is definitely heavily favored here.
You can just see it in his back and his width and he's just really thrown in and he's a full size one, £34.
You know, Kingsley was under there and if he were really confident, I would think he might have had a shot at a leg.
A But it was one of these situations where I don't believe he believed he was there.
Well, in Ironsides, hard on you.
I mean, he's going to stuff he's always been able to snap and go and he can fly.
And and I'll tell you what, he's hard on you when you get underneath.
And he just showed it there right off the bat.
Sometimes Ironside can start slow.
He didn't start slow tonight.
Now he's going to try to load up Kingsley and tilt him or put him on his back.
He has to improve it back.
Already, according to Dan Gable, are the two wrestlers who are now, when they get on top looking for the pin.
Yeah, he's really looking for the pin.
He doesn't want to settle for four or five point technical fall and the new rule change that keeps you from getting five points for technical fall.
Unless you have a 63 point nearfall in your in your match really gives the more aggressive wrestler So to shoot for and that's to get them on their back and penalty occasionally he's led up to two on the throw punch.
If you fall behind Ironside early you're in trouble because he just keeps gaining speed.
This time it took just a lull, this leg sweep, and he's in for his second takedown 4 to 1 going over lead.
That's one.
We have another one of those toss ups coming up on 142.
Next ten, Iowa's either Gillies or Copeland Maldonado of Iowa State.
Well, now 6 to 2 and Ironside shows a lot of technique here.
He's throwing the cradle on.
It's just what you said.
He's going for the back.
Well, he has Kinsley on his back.
Three.
How much time?
A half a minute.
He still has the cradle.
He can just find them to move as he wants.
It doesn't have the points.
Kinsley is in there trying to fight.
And of course, he is a fighter and not going to give up.
He's he's got the leg hooked and it's going to make Ironside work for this.
It's already a two point NEAR-FALL Look at that.
8 to 2 good first period as you might anticipate for Mark Ironside against a rookie out there, Frank Kingsley of Osage.
And in the first period, 8 to 2 Iowa stripe, the third, Kinsley gets his chance, hooks up the cradle right here and tries to get the points.
He does end up getting two.
Kinsley does fight, and he stayed in there.
Good for a rookie, like you said, just a freshman.
Get up.
He went under against Ironsides legs got stuffed under there and is now down 10 to 3.
So we're in a situation right here that Ironside really doesn't want to score that technical fall without getting the three point NEAR-FALL He's got a two, right?
Why are you going to point out their flaws?
All right.
Two is all right.
So I got the near fall.
Actually, the situations are not going to happen.
You're got to be a few and far between where you need one to make a lot of difference.
I think most 15 point leads are built with 112 to 4.
Waterman, an eight point lead.
The bottom is accused of stalling Barney Frank so his that this guy I'll just let go of me.
I'll.
I'll move as fast as you want me to.
A minute and 8 seconds to go, Ironside.
You know, you can see that he's a hard worker out there on the mat, but he's a hard worker in the room, too.
Gable calls him the hardest workers in the room trying to make a big cough.
Here.
Throw a kiss on his back.
Kiss you on his back.
You know, that reminds me when you see him taking movies off the field, when I go back to what Dan Gable was wrestling and he would take people down, he went off to Olympic training camp and he came back taking people down to their backs.
You know, you suddenly realize he's going to take them down to their backs much better than he did before.
16 to 7.
Are we keeping up on the takedowns and escapes here?
We're under 30.
That's 18 turn one green again.
Kinsley is charged with a stall and it makes it 17 to 7.
It's a point this time one warning and then a point.
Ironside trying to stuff the head and pry the arm right here.
Boy, when you don't want to get pinned, it's hard to pin a guy no matter what kind of talent.
Actions keep improving.
Great end of the second period.
17.
So it's a walk so far for Ironside.
There's Jeff McKenna's man set, come in, looks to them maybe a little heavier than when they're still a little bit.
And 618 pounder, £26 redshirting this year reversal role reversal for Ironside puts him up by 12 Got the arm bard there in a near risk now he's going to try to do do it for one last shot at getting his third straight 19 to 6.
What yeah keep it legal even got the eagle turning above the elbow.
Stay above the elbow.
He's got it.
Oh, he got it, got it, got it.
It's tight.
I'll be surprised if Kessler gets it.
Gets he gets out of this.
Watch the referee's hand.
If he slaps it, it's over 30.
They call things hard.
Things are starting to run away, Doug.
They are.
What happens at Carver Hawkeye is happening again.
5 minutes and 43 seconds.
I'll fall for Mark Ironside over Frank Kingsley.
He's got to.
He's got the arm here and got the chin right there.
And he's going to keep the chin go chest to chest, step over and hook the legs.
There's no way out.
See, he's holding the chin there.
That's why I guess he can't get out.
So it's Ironside over Kinsley.
It makes it 13 to nothing in favor of the Hawkeyes over Iowa State.
And I think that's a really a nightmare start for Iowa State.
What we said at the opening about Iowa State having turned the corner, it has nothing to do with whether Iowa State turn the corner or not.
It's just that you have to turning the corner and turning the corner In the first three weeks at Iowa Carver, Hawkeye are different things.
Now we have the match you were talking about with a couple of young men that we haven't seen, and that's Casey Gillis and David Maldonado, a couple of redshirt freshman Casey Gillis from Century High School in Bismarck, North Dakota.
That was where the Steiners came from.
So he's from a fine program.
He was a three time state champion in high school, lost only three matches in his high school career.
Of course, Maldonado was coached by someone that wrestling fans in Iowa remember, Iowa State national champion Bill Kelly in high school.
And he's Chicago.
He's Chicago Central in Hammond, Indiana.
David Maldonado, who is a sophomore there playing.
And he has a good record this year, 13 and five with four falls.
The word is he's improved a good deal this year.
This was what, Sears weight last year.
Maldonado filled up more on occasion.
Here's a guy that we sure had a couple of good ones.
You look at Coach Douglas, they're at this weight last year for both Iowa and Iowa State, Of course, Bill Zedek, national champion, and then Derek Monsour, who finished fourth last year.
A couple of voids in this lineup.
And these young men are trying to step in in a big way, make an impression on the crowd the first time either one of them has been out there on the mat in front of an Iowa first time.
At least Gillis has been out there.
Maldonado is on display last year a few times, but he had a big win this year.
Earlier, eight Frank Lakhan was rated sixth or seventh.
Yeah, he pinned him.
He was an all-American last year, and that was out of Vegas where Maldonado finished sixth, got injured, though, had an ankle injury.
And we'll see if it slows him down here.
We are told he pending the same way his old coach, Bill Kelly, pitched Brad Petras in that national finals of a cradle off a single.
Oh, he's very strong.
He's you can see his heavy belt and looks like a kind of a young bono.
And Gillis is a little taller.
There's a upper arm move by Maldonado, upper body, and it turned into the first takedown of the match.
Two to nothing.
I'd like to see them both open up here.
They both have big move.
Potential possibilities there.
I'd like to see them open up here in front of this big crowd here.
Josh Oh, two, two, one.
Escape.
That's all.
2 to 1 for Maldonado It's Iowa against Iowa State.
The earliest Iowa State and Iowa meet that I remember or anything about pre Christmas.
Maybe you're watching this right after seeing the Iowa state Iowa basketball game, which as we're looking at, it comes later in the day for big weekend And Iowa City, their swimming teams went to last night, Iowa City, Casey Gillis, there's Maldonado in on a single leg, got in on the leg, lost it.
He lost it.
But Gillis did a good job of defending right there.
And getting Maldonado out of his position, not being able to finish that.
Well, I think Derek Monster is still around the dressing room.
And so Maldonado has plenty of wrestling practice.
If you'd like to receive a free college wrestling poster with our season schedule right to this address, college wrestling poster, Iowa Public Television Post Office Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa.
And after the match, we'll tell you more about that in your schedule.
Wrestling news and lots more stories.
Now.
I put an arrow into it.
Here comes Gillis.
No points yet.
No points yet, except for the Maldonado has the still control control of the of the legs of Gillis shoulder with his arm that he is in there for now.
But if Gillis can come around behind him as he can and Maldonado is racking up right in time, that whole time he's up to 48 seconds.
Not quite a minute yet, but he's still a leading to to nothing.
2 to 1 in the score, 2 to 2.
All right.
I beg your pardon.
To the two second period group.
Look, I saw Glenn at about three go.
I will watch.
Coming in with that.
Casey Gillis, a freshman from North Dakota, wrestling, David Maldonado, sophomore from Indiana, wrestling in wrestle on one of the two big Iowa State.
Iowa meets this year for Jay and perfect guys.
Excellent.
No matter what is, nothing will happen here.
Both up and up and up.
Here we go.
Vallenato weight lost his supporting points.
I think he went to his support on his knees and he was out of bounds.
So it's still two to get you while not has been very active.
But Gillis is showing me a lot on defense.
That's right.
He's got he's got good defense right there.
MALDONADO in there, I mentioned earlier that he was a redshirt freshman.
You're right.
He's a redshirt sophomore.
Still two young men in this lineup.
And I think that Gillis is very proud of his defense through oh, he has lost three out of four matches this year.
I know you're going to win in Iowa.
And that's probably one of the reasons right there.
He has not one for inactivity, Can't play defense all the time.
Right?
That's right.
All right.
Now here's another reminder about that £250 match with Grant.
You got an interview with Coach Dan Gable asking about possible plans for retirement.
Throw in our season schedule the address for the poster, latest college wrestling news statistics about the first half here.
Now, as we get back to action, Maldonado goes right on the leg, gets a headlock, and Gillies is going to have to work hard to keep from being taken out here to talk about these as two part moves, you can get them in the air, but you've got to finish it.
MALDONADO Ready, willing and able, ready, willing and able to gets a cross here if he can pop his head out, pull it in again.
Good defense, Fire Defense by Gillies Both very talented wrestlers right here.
I'd say vallenato.
Looks like he's just the one year in college.
He is ahead of Gillis.
He's in his third year in college, and Gillis in his second year here and and just has been able to get in, execute just a little bit better.
Yellow's very talented, but his skills not quite up with his talent yet.
There's another shot.
He's in on that leg down that has been in a lot.
He has scored only once and Gillis hasn't been able to drop back in like, sure, Coach Cable would like him to be able to fall in on.
I'll tell you a lot of time he's got to work a bandage.
You could see blood through the bandage, no injury time.
I got no injury time because of blood.
As we say every year.
It's hard to pretend to blood.
The better to go in the match.
Yeah, there's.
We're getting ready for that.
Next big match is Lincoln McElroy 80 £150 back in the lineup after a year absence redshirting trying to make the Olympic team after and if you're a sports fan, you've got to be interested in that one because that is why I'm national champion against the national champion.
3 to 2 favor of Maldonado yellows not being able to get changes level and get in on the low, low attack.
The Maldonado is pushing.
He's pushing hard.
Well, he's defended very well.
But you can see the Iowa coaching staff saying, boy, we teach this guy some offense.
We're already going to have something.
But he's in a position now where he has to score in 25 seconds to go.
If he does, he win.
But he really hasn't come close to getting what he's wanting to get an arm on a lot of those.
He has not even been worn yet, so he figures he can probably hang on right here.
Right, Right.
Early warning.
There's the warning now.
But he knew right where he was.
You were right, Doug.
He wrestled a smart match.
That's it?
Yeah.
There it is.
Maldonado gets Iowa State.
It's first win 3 to 2 at £142.
Two national champions Chris Baldo and Lincoln McElroy are meeting tonight here at £150 now.
And earlier we spoke with both these two wrestler, 102 national champions, two national champions, guys.
Lincoln All right, here we go.
And Chris Bowen on who took the title when Michael Ray was out last year.
Marco Rubio is they're both in terms of eligibility seniors, both NCAA two terrific wrestler, very good competitors that are they're good at forcing people to wrestle their style.
So that's one of the styles.
Now here, what do you have to look for?
I know that Bono feels he's got to stay in and tie up, right?
Yeah, he's aggressive, but controlled.
He's got a lot of hand fighting.
He keeps good position and keeps moving forward.
Very strong with good defense.
But Mack waves wide open style.
He'll test your fitness.
He'll try to make that match wide open in high scoring and contrasting music, as you can guess.
That's right.
A McKelvey can shoot something from anywhere.
There was a heel pick he might even pick on the other side.
It gives you so much to think about, but Bono stays in front of it.
Now he has a single leg just for a second.
Bono Bono's very difficult to wrestle because he's conservative.
He capitalizes on mistakes because of his body type, but he's very smart, doesn't make a lot of mistakes.
They mapped him, if you remember, two years ago when there was a Bono doesn't want to remember all.
I was 22 to 10 or something like that.
But Bono has improved as much as anybody in the world in the last two years, except maybe like in the ring, maybe Lincoln Mack or maybe me.
He's taken his skills to another level to break it out of bounds, trying to make that Olympic team coming off that disappointing in the finals a couple of years ago to Steve Marinetti from Illinois.
And he's really taken it to another level, according to Coach Gable, turn out I'm out for some reason.
Put a back to the center That's a minute and 39 seconds left.
And Bono has a leg.
He does have the leg.
What do you do with that, though?
That's the question here.
Goes to the double it.
I don't think anybody going to score on this route if they're out about, Well, this is really a battle for position.
Well, Chris Bono of Iowa State and Lincoln McElroy, Phillips, South Dakota took last year off from the Olympic trials.
He had a bad match, she says, in the Olympic trials.
Almost made the Olympics almost made it.
But where's he going to be in 2000?
I'll tell you, there's where Bottle wants to be.
He wants to control that head with a headlock.
Well, and that's exactly right, Doug.
He wants to handle the frantic pace of McIlroy.
We go, but you can't do it any better than that.
Got that front headlock on it and work off of that.
That's good.
So far, Bono has has controlled the ball he wants to control after getting that.
It's a minute left in the first period.
Bono again has the front headlock right down.
Pull it out.
No to it, no to both wrestlers.
Dedicated, determined, hardworking wrestlers.
I came out here.
Go.
Well, we've heard we've heard each coach talk about the other coaches, man in glowing terms.
Well, yeah.
And then both of them say that microwaving may be the best hundred and 50 pounder ever.
And they both say that Bono, they've never seen anybody work any harder than Bono at improving his skills.
Kind of a rocky type story here, zero zero.
But you can see there hasn't been any activity.
Champ Bono, again, has they tie up with a Whizzer?
He's able to control the situation.
I think a lot of bounce back already cuts the angle.
And you're right, Doug, he is able he has been able to take McQuivey out of his game plan.
It goes if Lincoln had his way score he'd have 8 to 10 points scored by now.
He loves those high point matches for him.
There was a nice heel pick by Mac.
I'll repeat this test.
He's had one, there's two and there is a picked out on the end to the left after close but no cigar all the way through the period with 13 seconds left in the first period, Marco Rubio makes his first really good shot and comes away with two.
He goes right down to the near low ankle right there and is just crowds comes in for the low double and gets the two points clear cut Oh out of bounds with about 2 seconds to go McIlroy 82 and ball zero thankfully as I recall Bono that's a choice that the in the order of things here at the second period great here's Lisa McElroy Bill McCarron who gets a chance is pregnant with first child for Lincoln and Lisa and Lincoln's parents on either side of her all the way from South Dakota, as they usually are.
A lot of man sat back already takes down position Bono begins on top.
He knows he can't ride Ruby very long.
He'd like to get maybe 22nd time, but I don't think he's going to get 20 seconds this time.
Won three to nothing.
Mack arriving to national champions at the same weight.
But that was very telling right there.
Bono got in on a single but right away his position was destroyed by McIlroy, having got got his hips extended a bit and didn't even come close to finish in a single that he started against Lincoln because the hip power that Lincoln showed there three to nothing score Bono still working the control now there it goes back already in on the leg one more time and he's destroying the position of Bono a little bit more than it was before.
Well, on about barely out, just barely out.
He had it working the way he wanted to.
The knees slipped out of bounds.
And now McIlroy has said almost that he's changing wrestling, a little worn out hands.
You can tell McIlroy his confidence is up.
Oh, well, it moves back to back now.
And when you've beaten someone six times, your confidence has to be feel pretty good.
It's a big wall to break for Chris Bono warning.
And there's a warning against Bono now for inactivity in the second period.
Yeah, he was very active in the first period, but McIlroy has had up just a little bit on his heels.
And you don't dare go back on your heels against Lincoln McIlroy.
A couple of ways Chris wants to see improvement, I'm sure is did not let the score get away like it did a couple of years ago, but to also score against Mac or even until he can score against Mac or if he's never going to beat Jackson, It sounds very logical to me, but I know exactly what you mean.
McIlroy That goes all the way in to, you know, you know, that looks easy, but it's very, very, very subtle, The kinds of pressures and angles he's using in there, because Bono is a stable wrestler, he doesn't go down that way with most people.
He made up, here's the single leg and two to the takedown for two points.
And this one, you made a point earlier about Bono being a very improved wrestler.
Then we alluded to Mac or maybe maybe just as improved.
And that tells you what kind of intensity and desire McIlroy B has to take it from the level of being very fast to another level.
Yet he's running to get out on here and.
Right.
I think he wants to see if he can what he can work from the top.
That shows confidence right there.
You know, he knows he's got it going on his feet now.
He says, I want to I want to control on top.
I want to dominate.
I know out, out.
And the second period ends.
It was all McIlroy escaping a takedown and Bono was warned for stalling in there.
It's five zip.
He's going to choose to just let Bono away, go after him on his feet again and keep dominating use in international start.
Give Bono his first point.
There you go.
One, I wasn't sure he wants to go yet.
Why?
Wants to figure out what to do next or where McIlroy is going to go next.
Now, Bono goes right for the leg.
Now he's got a macro.
He was able to slip out and then come back down and the pressure continues on by McIlroy.
Be right there.
And this is real important for Chris Bono to stop, but it looks like a very free pressure, you know what I mean?
It's not a straight ahead pressure.
It's just an imaginative, athletic pressure coming from all angles.
Well, you know, McIlroy is certainly going to test Bono's defense and conditioning with his attack, that's for sure.
You and again, Bono makes the leg, but has not even come close to protect out as they go out of bounds.
5 to 1 now with 17 seconds left to go and now that's Iowa has won three out of four and has rolled to a 13 to 3 lead over Iowa State.
We're where, £150.
We'll have Joe Williams against one of two young wrestlers for Iowa State at 158.
When they come back after boy, I'll tell you that's Qualcomm able to get in was able to take his leg all the way around and hook and then reach through for the double and finish it down to the now taken Bono down to the mat Terrific takedown late in the match so used to call up bars car I back already this is a national champion he's beating and he and of course Dan Gable are very are very quick to show that at some point in the match if you can break the other guy you want and break his spirit.
Oh, God roll it up.
And I think he feels it's close to doing that.
Saw Bono Lisa happy that wife right now encouraging her husband on as she always does one more like there was a point there given to McIlroy v bono is charged with inactivity again backing out and it's a 2 to 6 point lead for McIlroy.
The over Bono on the right.
Macari likes to get himself and put himself in a position to scramble open up really wide open style right there, little guy.
And he has Chris Bono very frustrated here.
You can tell it's 8 to 2 with only 10 seconds, 9 seconds left to go.
And it's not hard to tell who forced the other to wrestle their style.
That's right.
One period, Bono was controlling the match without being able to score with that guy.
But already McIlroy that started with the second and away he went to eight to to an impressive victory for the returning national former national champion Lincoln McIlroy.
And that makes it 16 to 3, the end of the £150 match.
And as you know, Dan Gable is considering retiring following this season after 21 years of coaching the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And earlier, our John Kelly spoke with Coach Gable about the possibility of given the fact that there is retirement pending on the horizon.
At least that's what people are directing towards you going into Ames.
Do you think about that might be the last time that you go in there?
I don't think about that at any time.
I could sit down and maybe focus on stuff like that, but that's not a concern for me.
You know, I whether I and when I do, I don't really call it a retirement because I'm too young to be able to retire, I guess.
So I just change positions.
But, you know, might be this year, maybe next year.
But my focus has to be on my athletes, not on me.
And because I'm going to be in those arenas, I'm going to be continuing to follow in the sport of wrestling.
Let's talk a little bit about the retirement.
And so how is prepare for things in my life?
Is that something that you're doing right now that when you do decide to do it, that it's on your terms?
Yeah, I've been preparing for for ten years or more.
You know, it's like when when I wrestled in the Olympic finals, people asked me how long and how hard I trained.
Well, from day one back when I was in four years old.
You know, that's just the way it is.
So when I'm done with being a coach, it's something that I've been thinking about for a long time.
And it's not that I focus on that.
It's just But it's been building up year after year after year, and I put a little time in a little time in a little time.
And and it's build up to the point now where how I could handle it.
And I have a lot of homework done so it could happen if you had your biggest opportunity, what would it be to focus on fewer athletes, especially ones within the wrestling community that have graduated, that want to be international competitors like the local sports club people, people that want to win the Olympics in the year 2000, and also to focus on particular athletes and at the university and other sports that want to be great and particular programs and coaches, you know, that need some advice or some expertise that would maybe help them raise from one level of expertise to another level.
I know a lot of people are saying, oh, dad's going to retire.
He just doesn't want to do it because maybe he doesn't want that farewell tour, but yet you're not giving the opportunity, a lot of people, to be able to really say thank you.
I don't want a farewell tour.
No, but, you know, I. I don't mind the appreciation that people give me, but and they may not give it to me, you know, unless they know I'm getting out.
But that's not important.
You know?
I know whether they're on my side or against me and competition, even though when they're against me down deep, they have to be for me because I've done too much for the sport that will make them not appreciate it, especially when I'm not against them.
Well, nice to see you again, my friend.
After talking to Dan Gable, we find out not much more than we knew before.
Really, about whether he's going to retire or not.
But, you know, it's everybody has fun trying to figure out what he's up to.
But he does make plans, doesn't he?
Well, he does.
And he's made plans, like I said, since he was a young boy on everything that he's done.
Boy, I just think how exciting.
Whatever his plans are for after coaching must be, it's just going to be another huge thing for wrestling.
I guarantee you that he never does anything without being prepared for it.
Well, I'll tell you what.
We have a preparing for preparation for you four on a big season of teammates.
This is only the first of ten Tim Johnson and I at Iowa Public Television.
Remember we had Augsburg and Watford, two great division, three teams.
We're going to happen again in January from Wartburg Fieldhouse and the National Team Duals.
That's one of our favorites.
Well, this year we're going to see him twice.
We're going to show you the semifinal night on Saturday, the 18th of January, Lincoln, Nebraska, and then have the Sunday finals, which we've carried you in the past.
That is one of our favorite dates in the entire world.
And I think it's one of the wrestlers that you see the big teams, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State, Arizona State, January, February eight, Saturday at 9:00.
Those 9:00 starts are due same day delays.
As you probably know, Illinois, a very fine team.
And I've got style at that Iowa and Iowa State the second time and we'll also see Don breaks northern Iowa team at Iowa State on Sunday February 23rd.
What Carson you and I said hosting the Nationals this year, the second time in three years that it's been in Iowa and that's up in the unit uniform.
It will be a lot of fun to see those greatest wrestlers in the United States, at colleges, at the unit dorm this year.
You might be making your plans for that right now.
Well, a lot of wrestling news.
Dan Gable, I guess, is part of it because of not just because of his getting ready to retire, but you see him on crutches out here tonight.
There he is on crutches now.
He has a very bad hip.
And I understand it's a pretty good chance he's going to have it replaced.
He would like to have it replaced, obviously, with technology today, such great success with hip replacements.
He's had a very bad and lame gift.
That's mean means there's no cartilage, his bone on bone and it's grating.
And it also as he favors that hip and it wears on his other so he would like on his other joints he would like to have that operation design there.
Talking to Phil Harry, the information director, sports information director, if you'd like to receive a free college wrestling poster with our season schedule, there's the address.
The right to college wrestling poster.
Iowa Public Television Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa 50131 Against College Wrestling Box 6450 Johnston, Iowa.
50131 The kids love to have that up in the room or on the on the wall at the school and the wrestling room, wherever you'd like to have it.
We enjoyed reminding you that this is college wrestling in its 21st year.
We've had a good time and we'll continue to have a good time this year with those big, big meets.
Well, we're going to have a big, big match again here because the meet coming up.
The match coming up features an NCAA champion for Iowa.
And this is Joe Williams winning the national title against Ernest Bennion from Illinois defending NCAA champion Hoyas.
This was the best finals match in years, I believe, As I was there, it was just incredible.
And here.
Right with eight, 9 seconds left, Joe Williams gets his takedown for the win win right there.
In his opinion, does he get the takedown?
No.
The official calls, no takedown.
And the win nine eight for Joe Williams.
These two will meet in the Illinois Iowa match that we have later in the year.
And so we get Joe with Joe Williams right now, one of the most talented athletes you'll ever see.
Whatever sports you want to come to at the Van Gable.
And he are very, very close to getting Joe Williams prepared for wrestling because, you know, dad has learned over the years very well to make the mental attitude of his individuals different from each other strong as they go to him.
He just as it used to be for him, it's like he's against bat Pat.
It's of Iowa State and they get it £158 and boom, there's the definition of a split seconds between the time the referee said Wrestle and Joe Williams had a takedown.
Two to nothing in favor of Williams.
Now a little bit about Matt Pat it's if you remember from last year you may remember he was wrestling at 177 and I think even at 190.
That's true, right?
So what is he doing at £158?
Well, obviously, it was an undersized 77 and 90 pounder.
And he also wants to find a way and he's a competitor.
He loves to compete and he wants to find a way into the lineup.
And he's willing to sacrifice a huge jump on a bunch of weights from last year.
And it was not easy, I'm sure, for him to make 158.
In fact, I think that's the other reason that John Delian weighed in as well, because they weren't quite sure Matt Pettis could make it this fast.
Obviously he did.
Well, speaking of fast, we've got Joe Williams.
He's a great athlete with amazing feel for the sport.
He's got great balance in length and strength, quickness and explosion.
You put all that together and you've got somebody that can score whenever he wants to score.
I noticed that pallets did not show any white feather there.
He was going to go after it.
He made the takedown attempt and he did not lose anything by it.
He wasn't counted for a score down there.
Now you're and it's 2 to 1.
Joe Williams wasn't exactly explosive or there look again boy just taps the head and drops down to the bottom ankle and and this pick seemed right to the mat for two points but with the eastern swing that they just got done with Penn State back east, Joe Williams didn't exactly have an outstanding performance, although he won.
He did well.
Dad wasn't on the trip.
You know, he was having a little trouble with his hip and I think that Joe discovered that he needed the reassurance of the he won, but he wasn't having any fun.
Well, the influence of the coach can not be overstated.
It is there.
And Dan Gable is the epitome of a coach's influence on a team and individuals far too now in favor of the talented Joe Williams, but perhaps is still trying to make an attempt.
But he's just not quick enough to hold office.
So very quick.
Mr. Williams, undefeated in four matches this year with two falls, one right out of 622 after he gives the escape out of bounds, we'll give you the information on a number of takedowns and their falls, the like between periods Here you're looking at Bobby.
What's he say about Joe Williams, his opponent, the whole he's the whole enchilada that says that every year.
Look at that tight double right there.
He gets his head inside two more and it's a 8 to 3 first period for Joe Williams.
The first team score 16 two, three.
Total points goes just about that takedowns a bunch for Iowa, only two for Iowa State.
All the near Falls went to Iowa US back the car for Hawkeye roll up got started right away as it often does just like Joe Williams did in this match.
He got started way to right away and it could be a Williams roll up right here.
Five points spread in the first match as we are as we point out.
This is not to say that the turnaround of Iowa State has not happened.
No, no.
This is just the difference between the best in nation and and the next level at Iowa, at Carr for Hawkeye, this place has it.
Only one team has ever beaten Iowa here in 100 beats Penn State.
That's right.
And they've been beaten many other times here.
They've never been able to forget.
Their gable has made that a point when they've ever It's a warning of all things.
I think it was against Joe Williams for not improving his position, I believe not moving up there.
Lincoln mcCorvey looks refreshed.
March 24, 7241 was just announced by not a big crowd for Iowa State No.
Saturday afternoon early in the season, very early in the season, the first time they've ever met.
December score on the meet 16 to 3 score in the match.
Joe Williams 12 five.
And the map patterns of Iowa State that parity in on a single right here But he's down on his knees and soon to go down even further if Joe Williams has his way here with the pressure that he's applying right back, Pat, it's not going to be able to get underneath and lift like he's going to need to.
But who can get Williams 14 to 5?
You give you a little lecture here on takedown techniques, Matt Pat It's the middle De Soto.
Remember in high school, his home is Adel, Iowa, west of Des Moines.
He's a computer engineering major in school.
And I'll tell you, when I go out there against Joe Williams, it does not compute.
I was down 14 to 5 at the end of two periods, and Williams gets his time down because Pat it's picked up which is an interesting you just boy countered it right he's got the chin right to the just like Ironside Zabel Underhook and he has the chin that's important there he's trying to get chest to chest now and this is danger time for Iowa State.
There's almost a whole 2 minutes left in this period.
Talk about explosive.
He's just going to settle in.
And this is the ride he's got, like you said, a minute 42 ride.
Settle, right.
Settle that pad It's of Iowa State on his back.
Got countered hard by Joe Williams right here at the beginning of the second period.
Watch the referee's hand Keith Pulling the game back shoulders to the mat for one second.
That's all it takes to go.
Still a minute, 13 to go.
There it is.
It can happen.
Get your head down big time.
Move.
Go now.
It's a very big move by Joe.
Yeah.
5 seconds.
Oh, yeah.
5 minutes and 51 seconds into the match, Joe Williams did this.
Here's a move.
Underhook and the chin right there.
Chest to chest, settled in, rolled back shoulders to the man that's had.
It was concerned with what the bar on the arm was.
But Williams was so quick with that reverse half there that one, when he got the chin, that was it all over and 22 to 3 for 22 to 3.
This could be a really good match right here.
Yes.
This would be another good one.
This is this is another one of the toss ups, we've call it at 167.
But Iowa State is only one one of those toss ups so far.
And that was at £142.
This is Mike Huckabee, ranked 10th, by the way, at this way to get to Barnhart, senior from Duke Waller for Iowa State.
Mike Duker was the one.
It was fifth last year at a much lower weight in the Big Ten and eighth in the NCAA.
And he's way up at £167, very comfortable this year.
He says he's not cutting weight hard Heart has a double tough double leg right there Horton and scores from Ohio State They're scores He's got a wide open style He has the potential to score big points or possibly catch euchre here.
UConn of course more of a steady competitor just like last year becoming an all-American at 1/50 because he kept plugging along.
A lot depends on how UConn's able to handle the okay jump from one 5167, I'd say.
And these these gentlemen go way back to the high school wrestling in northeast Iowa.
Yuccas from Osage, same town as Frank Kingsley was from who lost earlier to Mike Mark Ironside, Bart Horton's from Dubuque.
Wallach, where his father is the coach looks to be able to lift, but you know, you see a much stronger and bigger Bart Horton here that UConn's able to cut the angle right there, scramble position.
The way.
Well.
HART Well, he's got a hip position then.
He's still got the leg, though.
He's just going to hang on here until KEITH Pullman's high.
He's got hip position.
That makes it a little easier for him against UCA.
But stalemate, stalemate.
Referee feels that they can't go any further.
That one man isn't one either.
Man to football, You know, will not improve his position.
It's a minute 27 to go and okay, guys, here we go.
In the first period, we're halfway through and it's 2 to 1 in favor of the second mark controls against Connors.
That's right.
And both of them scrambling right here.
But again, Horton being in a position right here, if he can, if he can make the get his leg out from being hung on there by Yeager, he'll be able to turn in and get the two to the foot down.
But he's trying to keep pressure back of course, on euchre itself.
And I think you probably got to give this position up here.
He does have second takedown for Barnhart, but Horton certainly looking more physical and because of his style, he can he can get sloppy at times, but he's been able to turn his physical prowess into a 4 to 1 lead.
And now he's got the cradle hooked up.
Oh, he does great a lot.
Euchre, one third.
Yes, you can hook it up sometimes.
But the point is to get the other man over on his back with it.
And there are about 20 seconds to go in the first period here.
The cyclone leaves the hawk, although his team trails by a big score.
You know, Horton's one of these we've seen when he's on.
He's on.
Yeah.
Yup.
No AC and obviously there's the other side to that but right now it looks like he's got the on switch turn here, go for the first period.
Anyway.
Gosh 11 seconds.
It's the first time an Iowa State wrestler has had two takedowns in a match today.
And Horton would like to win on takedowns here because that establishes a lot of control.
Barton was a little bit too quick on the whistle, but you can show that he's he's alive.
He's fired up and ready to go.
I don't think I the Iowa state that's going to criticize him for that but with their heart and seems quite comfortable on the mat tonight against UGA.
We go by 4 to 1.
A big first period for Bart Horton of Iowa State.
These are both seniors.
There's two ladies, the athletic directors of respective universities down the right, Jean Smith, and left Bob Busby going on the day of big events.
Iowa, Iowa State Wrestling, Iowa, Iowa State basketball at Carver Hawkeyes.
Second period starts of centers like UConn.
Iowa's won 67.
Potter starts on the bottom half, still controls up, although UConn has up has got to his feet.
He does not control the hands, however.
So what he caught and able to stay in close enough to not give up the points there.
UConn still fighting, still coming after you.
If you used up only 20 seconds here in this third period with Tim Johnson.
I'm Doc Brown.
Reliable public television's coverage of Iowa at Iowa State at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
After £158, it's 22 to 3 in favor of the Hawkeyes.
They've been rolling along, but they trailed here 4 to 2 right back to Barnhart like UCA, an all-American last year at £150, now up at 167, up two.
Wait, does the shot a lot like Darrell Weber?
Yes.
You know, he sacrificed for the team.
He got a double by a very fine double leg by Hart.
There was no counter to that.
If he can keep his shape, if he's shaped good, Horton, he's just bigger and stronger right now than UConn.
It is true, isn't it?
It's Freedom Hawks already had a big win this year.
I guess Crossface real tough crossface in their on UConn's looking really strong on top.
Look at that great right hook up Duke returns in and gets the escape but it's 6 to 3.
In fact, when we were talking to Bobby Douglas before the match, he said that let's take a look at that last takedown, by the way.
Nice double header.
The outside comes down and then gets good hip control and gets the two points.
It's just what I was saying, that Bobby Douglas said, if Horton can get that double leg, he'll win.
But now if you can get the second leg, he feels he can win it.
He just got his first single leg and his first takedown.
Well, now right to five.
Now we find out who's.
That's right.
And never discount the Carver hot guy arena to give you just that extra surge that you need.
But Horton looks strong still, right?
That's because UGA got flattened out there and Horton did a nice job of spinning around the side and getting the two points reversal.
And it came right at the end of the period so that there was no answer.
Thanks down 8 to 5 in favor of Hawk Barnes.
Horner's a Brad Horton too, of course on this Iowa State team was injured and I probably would go 158 if he were ready.
But no relation.
No relation like there's another Utah or two on the Iowa State on the Iowa team, of course.
And he is a relation brother.
There's Ben Major right there Osage boys.
A lot of tradition from Osage, Iowa over the years like we said to Iowa start young man wrestling Bart Horton from Dubuque John Horton is starts under and you can watch him on his feet and that's a goal that's an escape for Horton makes it a four point lead 9 to 5.
And in riding time it is Horton's riding time point to take away because he has one sitting out there late and right now he has almost 2 minutes of riding time.
Not a good move by you for the good you became in a second time.
What?
I'll tell you what, that was an excellent.
He can finish that off.
That's the epitome of second effort but it's really tongue Yeah on top on the math.
You couldn't take advantage.
He had it so close right there and he just didn't finish it off.
And you got to give Horton a lot of credit there because he just kept going, used his style, his strength well, and he's up by six points, 11 to 5 to 4 point swing right there.
Yes, it is.
It could have been very and Horton just kept calm.
Coming right up.
Break it down to 11 to 5.
Break it down.
Credit notes go out of bounds.
Still very go guy here.
No loss of control.
Horton will come back to the center the mat on top quickly with 57 seconds left in this match and go to 177 will have the second ranked wrestler in the country Barry Weldon real estate and all-American against Humboldt senior Tony Ursuline.
Four.
I'll break it down.
One of the few matches where you'd say Iowa State was favored coming in that we call it this one a toss up.
But Hart has best last year so far, 11 of six out double Harden's kept it wide open.
He's really kept the pressure on.
And even when UConn's been in a couple of nice shots and mounted a charge, Horton has to look at that.
He has answered it just like right there a great match by Bart Horton.
UGA just went down into position to get a double leg and went around him and scored and he's shown good shape.
Yes.
And a lot of control here.
It's a big match, big win for Iowa State.
Here comes a double leg by just a little too little, too late by, you know, still coming.
But what they need end and what that took away was if Horton would have gotten another point there, another takedown, they would have had an extra point for the team and they just gave it up.
So save that.
It's a legal victory by five points instead of a 14 to 9 for Bart Horton.
And nevertheless an impressive victory over All-America at a different weight.
Mike UGA of Iowa a second cyclone victory.
The score is 22 to 6 14th nine in favor of Barnhart.
Now let's go to 177 there.
Very well done from Colorado.
He's a senior.
He's placed in the big eight, two year and three years in a row.
He was all-American last year, finished 5167 at the Nationals.
And this year he was the winner of the Las Vegas Open champion.
He's one of these wrestlers that just kept improving, keeps improving over the years.
And he's super strong.
He's hard to score on.
And he has really come long ways.
He wants to improve on his fifth place finish last year.
He's very sound like like the other Hansen and Bono, They're all sound wrestlers.
They just ran into tough opponents tonight.
But he's hard to beat.
Weldon is, and he stays at it.
Now.
His opponent is Tony Ursuline, his first as a starter for the Iowa team.
He's humbled and, you know, he was a football player in high school, was an all state running back and all that to an all state running back in his high school days.
But he is in the driver's seat at £167, £77 for Iowa against Barry Weldon.
And again, this is an early season test for both of these wrestlers.
Well, it's a test Any time you go up against Weldon, it's a test of your shape because he's going to test you.
He goes, he goes, he goes, he's going to go the whole match.
He's in good shape.
He's a competitor.
And any time you go up against any ill wrestler at Carver Hawkeye Arena, it's a test physically, psychologically, every way you can think of right?
That's right.
Two, two cyclones have passed it tonight.
Only two Iowa leads 22 to 6 and we're at 177.
Iowa will be favored at 190, where they have sent lethal hard against a rapidly improving, we understand.
Matt Mulvihill I've seen him this year, but we've heard good things about him.
And then a toss up, I'd say heavyweight boxing.
West had a Trent High, Trent Heinicke.
That should be a terrific contrast between two Iowa high schoolers now in college matched up the last of the ten weight well and behind yes to bring him to the mat the opposition of control to get the point they just checked him by on his feet and he knows right where he is and he's trying to get the points without stepping out of bounds.
He does.
He got the two down.
Doesn't matter of course as you know, that person's out of bounds as long as the supporting parts of the attacking wrestler are in or one of the wrestlers is in there you are to do nothing to that come in.
Michael Weldon's one of these wrestlers that, you know, has just fallen in line with with Douglas's system, believes in it and just has put his himself as a wrestler in the hands of Douglas.
And Douglas has brought him along to this point.
Well, one of the wrestlers that you haven't seen is Ben Perkins of Iowa State weighed in today also with Weld.
And at this weight, he's what is considered one of the young men of the future.
They have all two or three or four red shirts in the room right now who look very good.
And they had signed up three great prospects for next year that aren't even here yet.
So there's definite future for Iowa State to go with what they have.
Well, absolutely.
I mean, the future is so bright for Iowa State, it's almost blinding.
I mean, when you think about the fact that he's got a good, solid group of kids here, but really the freshman and recruits are way more highly touted than this group that he has wrestling for him right now, coming into school out of bounds.
I know you got a warning.
Warning, warning against Ursuline for inactivity.
He's going to have to step it up here.
Another level today in to touch Weldon because Weldon is very tough controlling, knows what he's doing, does make a lot of mistakes out there.
I see some tutu on.
Those are the red shirts we were telling you about.
And if you look at the first two block of Sanderson, there are more coming in, more blockers, one more block.
It was just signed and a third, Sanders was just the only warning in Utah second period.
What man so tough in a lot of these guys Bobby Douglas was talking about the other day and I know Dan Gable believes it, too.
We look at all the brother act you've had here.
It makes a lot of difference.
It's a good thing.
I mean, it cuts down on your recruiting efforts.
You know, if you if you do a family right, they're going to send their kids to you if you treat them right.
Right.
And if they have success and if they're good trainers, it just doubles the the number of good trainers in your room.
And plus, from a relationship standpoint, which you can't forget is a big part of wrestling, You've got, you know, friends for life and the families become close and it's just a it's just a great situation when you can get good sets of brothers.
On wrestling, even if they are personal rivals.
I look at the Manics, you know, who are very close, and yet they were terrific rivals in a row.
All the brands.
I mean, you know, they just make it it takes a level of competition up in the room.
Well done it on the high leg, outside the outside.
SINGLETON Get it to try to get at a gap one point of Keith pull and the referee says that Ursuline is being inactive and this time it's a point Ersan looks a little tentative like he doesn't really want to just let it all loose there and and therefore gets called because the official says, yeah, it looks tentative to me to puts well then up 3 to 2.
Of course Ersan had 1.4 actually guys coming out there at the beginning of the second period.
Well it has dominated this match although he's only you if you look at it in the head by one point and that's what Tom Brands and Tommy Ortiz are the two assistant coaches of the rest of the sides.
Iowa and Iowa State are telling us that's one point.
It's one point get out there and get it down.
But the single to it.
Well, the Iowa state coaches are just really after exhorting well to get after don't stand with him really pick up pressure on all he did I was that's what you call a dominating move And right now I'd like to just with 20 seconds left, he wants to dominate him right here and keeping flat on the on the mat seconds the first 5 to 2 on the scoreboard a minute 30 writing time, effectively 6 to 2 right now, four point lead.
And you are, Tony, a chance to come out the beginning of the third period for a three point lead for.
Well it was all on top actually since I think he was ahead by more speaking 77 pounders Royce Alger he just had a couple of knee surgeries, you know, after a lot of wrestling in his career, international after high school, college and a lot of work at the Iowa room, that changes his life.
Yeah, Now he's the strength coach and he's married, going to have a child.
So a lot of change in Roy's allergies life.
Great.
Well done against Ursuline.
Ursuline is of the trip.
Yeah, Well done.
Not only got an escape point, but he got a penalty point for locked hands against it.
Right here.
Right here.
It needs to come up.
He finishes single that he has on Ursuline.
Ursuline trying to come around.
Walden's going to crowd the hips.
He's got the ankle and crowd over and get the two points.
If he can hook he does takes the leg where it's dominating, not a 9 to 2.
Needless to say, he has riding time.
He has almost 2 minutes worth a minute.
45 counting with a minute, 10 seconds to go in the match.
Pull it down.
Oh Very efficient.
Keith Pullman.
He hasn't had a lot of controversial calls to worry about in this match.
Of course, what you're rolling it up.
And Iowa is ahead as they are 22 to 6.
Stroud is going to love you.
The control tends to be happier about it.
But again, well, this one putting on the pressure.
And Ursuline is again penalized for backing out.
He doesn't necessarily fit the Iowa stereotype of after you all the time right here.
Ersan a suit.
Tony looks tired and he has looked tired for a while, but a lot of the credit goes to very Wheldon who keeps the pressure on you take down for Wheldon right now.
We talked about Weldon's earlier success, a Las Vegas champion last week beating Mitch Clark in the finals.
He's he's on a on a high right now.
And like I said, he's going to try to improve on his fifth place finish that he had last year.
First escape exit he got right hurt it sweet 14 before Wheldon has done a work been like totally dominating and look on every corner and Nelson right there and stepping out in front with a lot of confidence and at it's over so Iowa State wins its second in a row and that's a major decision for Barry.
Well, the 15th the four at makes it four points for his team now Iowa, 22 and Iowa State ten.
There is Tom Brandes.
Well, he looks a little relaxed there.
But you saw him in a different position possibly last summer on another occasion, Tom grabs the Iowa's assistant wrestling coach.
Yes, you saw him on the staff at the Olympics after winning when it really same thing to me was when my hand was raised after the match.
Everything else from there was anti-climatic.
Just because I live for the competition, the competition is what it's all about.
And strapping on the boots, going out there and performing in front of, you know, in this case, 8000 fans.
But, you know, the stand was being on the stand with the metal and the national anthem.
That was something that I won't forget either.
But it was kind of anti-climatic.
Like I said, I kind of live to perform.
Tom Brandes, who is now passing on his own winning ways to the wrestlers here in Iowa For Dan Gable as an assistant coach, it's 22 out of ten.
We're at £180.
And here is a fine young Iowa wrestler, finished second in the country last year, finished fourth in the country last year, second in the Big Ten lead, Full heart, only a sophomore from Decorah from here.
And his opponent is Matt Mulvihill, a junior from Darling Des Moines.
And the Iowa State program was already beaten two ranked wrestlers this year.
Yeah, he's had a good start, good start this year, come back from a lot of adversity from the standpoint of injury.
Well, you know, we're told he had a slow start last year and Bobby Douglas says it was because of that ankle injury.
He just never quite got over that and he just really didn't realize how good he was.
Well, Lethal realized how good he was last year when he became an all-American as a freshman.
He's strong and steady and just a typical Iowa athlete.
As we said, he's an Iowa Iowa boy from Decorah, and he's a good guy, has a good hard pace and keeps going for 7 minutes.
He'll be a solid favorite going into this match right here.
But like you said, Mulvihill has had a good start.
He just tends to get tired.
Sometimes the match goes on.
He has a tendency to get in trouble trying for a big move.
Ball the hill of Iowa State against second Lee, full heart of the Hawkeyes, who has a two to nothing lead route out of Iowa State, as you know, won the Las Vegas Open last week.
And Mulvihill was one of the reasons he placed out there, had a good tournament and Iowa State winning over Illinois first and second place and box Hill came out of that roll Granby action right there but hasn't capitalized yet for the four the points right left see what he can do with that full out looks comfortable on top and the writing time clock is ticking away.
He has almost a minute of the running time to go with it.
So now consider potentially dangerous there a bad angle involved there.
So lethal heart is pulled off and we'll send him back to the center again.
They'll set up at full heart in the position of advantage and a minute, 21 seconds to go in a three minute first period.
You mentioned the knee there and Full Heart certainly had his own share of adversity last year as a freshman.
He didn't off until later in the year because he had some ligament dam when a lot of people still wouldn't.
That's right.
We saw him at the National Duals.
That's where he first made his splash and up the hill.
But kind of hard nosed young man that any coach would want on his team.
Going out with Red, riding Mulvihill very well.
He has a minute and a half of writing time.
We're talking to Coach Gable.
He's saying that the room's a little bit different for full heart and what's happened this year with Travis.
Pfizer not here because he's taken another coaching job, Royce heading to meet Royce, Alger having some knee surgeries.
And and so there's not as much big wrestler competition for the big wrestlers in the Iowa room.
And so it'll be interesting to see how that affects see full heart there.
When I had the leg in going into that what's known as the Turk position try to get two points out now he's going to suck them back to try to go for it.
And Bobby Douglas is telling his man to put a full heart on his back.
And he does that well and he's got that there and pull out, get on the bed with only 5 seconds left.
That's not when you want to make a mistake like that.
Oh, 2 to 2.
He took advantage of a little slip up there.
That's Cathy Gable looking a little bit nervous of that move.
How you want them all when you're hearing car park.
I usually get all day.
Sounds like your hair's full out.
Little danger right here.
He's on his back and his shoulders are close there.
And he Mulvihill will reach over and make the turn and get the two points to two.
Two.
We're going into the second period of now with a tie score.
Joe Hart feels comfortable on his feet, so he just lets Mulvihill go and he's willing to give up the one that puts him behind 3 to 2 because he feels comfortable out here on the seat takedown.
He had the only takedown early and then rode most of the first period.
He's getting the underhook sit there all the way, also way fullerton in on the single leg, head on the looking to drop down but she does is looking for that other leg to come up here he comes up and stays with him for two points now and it's 4 to 3 now during the full heart goes up here Bobby Douglas is off here in our right.
We'll tell you what his single leg finish just stays with him tight on the hips right there and keeps his toes in for the two points.
He says his mathematical mama hill.
You're in this one now.
It's four four.
Full heart has both ticked off.
So down reversal that made a big difference came at the end of the first period.
It was not a takedown.
And Bobby Hill still has not convinced Pollock of anything on the seat except that he full heart is, well, better at it.
Whoa, That was a great little shot there by full heart.
Because not only did he get in on the leg right there, but he attacked and just pounced on the hips of Melvin Hill and took him down Mobile Hill, not controlling the tie ups like he needs to get to.
You got.
Oh, I you very three 8 to 5 to start that one full heart said that was so easy last time I'm going to go back at it again.
Yeah that was a nice shot by Mobile Hill but again full heart able to get hip pressure on top and break Mulvihill down to where he can't lift.
He's got to reestablish that hip position Mobile Hill or he's going to be in trouble Yeah good step forward for leg side always 8 to 6 score full heart trying to break that grip right there so he can get around Mobile Hill and get the two points to extend his lead.
He's up 8 to 6 and to the second period, 8 to 6.
Well it's a full heart is dominated on the feet, there's no doubt.
But it's still an 8 to 6 match.
There is what happened in the first half.
Iowa got out fast.
Whitmer beat Sanderson 17 to 8 man.
I had a double overtime win, an upset.
That was a big one.
Ironside.
What a pin.
Then Iowa State got its first win at 142.
And in that big 150 Pontiac, you didn't get a chance to see their record here.
Mac already beat last year's nat So 20 a ten right now There's the there's the rest of course the Big ten by Williams over padded sand and then two big wins in a row for Iowa State Bart Horton looked real good against euchre and Wheldon dominated early 190 and here comes full heart around again for another takedown like that.
11, two, six, seven, 11 full are doing a good job of defense right here because mobile here is making a shot but he's not getting in far enough and fast enough to really put full heart danger.
11 to 7.
Well, if it hadn't been for that reversal, this would not be a close score here.
One, two, three, and in wrong.
Oh, that too.
Yeah.
You don't even have to try yet.
I got to know how well they gave back.
One, one, two and two.
I believe we did.
Yeah, but what I need, I'm not quite sure how they scored that, but all I do know is the score at the moment is 15 to 7 in favor of lethal Hardys now in major decision territory.
Actually the off mobile shot.
Then they did give a takedown to full heart and then two near-fall points So 15 to 7 with about a half a minute left to go here at 190.
And full heart has dominated it right.
We made a little mistake at the end of the first period got reversed.
He's been proven picking up more than that.
Yeah, he's picking up where he left off last year.
He's kept a good pace.
He's just a winner.
I'm looking forward to the heavyweight match.
One, two.
And this up here after this one is over, because two fine young wrestlers do both in Iowa high schools.
The future for those weights in Iowa and Iowa State, Lee Fulford has just racked up a big win, a very dominating win, very good win for 487 for 18 to 7 as a final score, Add four points to the Iowa total.
Make up the Hawkeyes 26 at the Cyclones ten As we go to heavyweight, I don't know.
Let me put this on our list of toss ups.
Tip and tip.
John Liston toss up.
Yeah, but I think the toss up have gone away.
And let's see, how have they gone to toss up a 118 went the way of Ohio, one by two went the way of Iowa State.
Iowa State, 158 went to Iowa State.
Now here we 67 101 67 and here we are at heavyweight West hand went to South Tabor High School is from Tabor redshirt freshman for Iowa.
Lots of talent Dan Gable says, and the sophomore who is still only 19 years old, Trent Swisher, Cedar Rapids Prairie, who wrestled last year right out of high school for Iowa State.
They like to redshirt, mature a little bit, but they can't afford to have a heavyweight.
He's just that much better than anybody they have.
And like I said, is a redshirt freshman who's lost a couple times early this year.
But he doesn't have a lot of experience, especially in big dual meets like this.
And he nicked us.
Yeah.
Winning last year in a in the Iowa state dual meet but Dan thanks he as we say I'll repeat he thinks he has a world of talent.
Oh he's got a lot of strong athlete he's going to be a great athlete down the road but he does need to get some matches into gaining the experience.
This is one of them right here.
He Nick, as you said, in his second year as a true sophomore, he's really done pretty well.
Yes, he has a he Nick is maybe a few pounds heavier, but they're somewhere in the two thirties.
And in fact, that's kind of a surprise for Bobby Douglas.
He said, you know, he started training, so worked out so hard, lost £20.
He lost a lot of weight.
And we just as he hadn't lost so much weight there he goes in on the leg up.
There he is on a low single right there.
He likes to he needs to come up here, take advantage.
Come on to the other side of it and cast over to the other side.
Let's go see.
Right.
You can tell he's listening to his coach because he's trying to get to the where where coach wants him to go.
Some some wrestlers.
The coaches.
Yeah, some don't.
Some hear him and pretend like they don't.
And that drives the coach nuts but it looks like he Nick right there is a really a joy to coach because the coach yells go to the right and you see he Nick move to the right.
No score here with a minute and a half gone, a minute and a half to go in the second period and see him putting the pressure on low.
But I'll tell you, a hand is not a guy you want to go chest to chest with without thinking about it because he likes to lock up and throw.
I think they wrestled in high school too, and that's a couple of good ones.
Heavyweights West Hand of Iowa and Trent of Iowa State.
You're going to see them for a while, we think, because one's a freshman, other is a sophomore who has not redshirted back them.
Then you can see him coming out there And seniors, you know.
Right, right, right.
Fifth year seniors, Iowa.
So it's going to be around a while, warning on hand.
And neither one of the wrestlers is the kind they're going to give up this position either.
They're good competitors.
And so it is interesting for Iowa fans to have Iowa products there and and very, very talented wrestlers.
Oh, hey, they're going to read Iowa has wrapped this match up, this meet up 26 to 10 going into the heavyweight.
But of course, it doesn't matter right at the moment to either one of these young men and to their fans, because they like to say was the first shot by hand.
He's in on the single leg with the score zero zero.
See what he can do with it, see how he encounters counters.
He needed a good job right there of countering hands.
Still has an opportunity.
No.
He thought about going out of Boston.
He realized he had a good chance to counter.
Yeah, he did a great job by Heeney because hand really had control at the first period of scoreless first period, a scoreless Trenton neutral.
Neutral once.
Who had the choice that time?
You know, every time.
Every time we have time off here's time out for West hand it was who has maybe a pinched nerve or something his neck something that's not because he's feeling obviously discomfort No trainers are standing on the edge of the match wondering if they should come out.
Now.
They will.
That means that the trainers will look at him and Bobby Douglas can coach wrestler trained here.
Well, we were talking about I was talking about Gable's concern about losing some of the big wrestlers in the room.
And then it's the opposite problem at Iowa State, where Trent Haney has people like Justin Greenlee, who was an all-American, you and I, in the room there.
So there's a fun meeting.
We had Augsburg in Wartburg Division three, Iowa, Minnesota teams.
Great guy.
Last year was at first and second and again last night.
It was two years ago that we had them and then Wartburg won the national championship last year.
Augsburg second.
So what a great time to have him talk January 12th and we're looking forward to that.
They really give you a good show.
I was here and Keith Jackson, the football announcer, say if there was one thing he wished he could have done in his career, it was called a Division three football game.
And here you and I get the chance to do the rest of it, get to do wrestling.
It's Jim Miller.
Miller's got a great program going up there at Wartburg and it's just fun to do Division three.
And there was just tough competitors.
Iowa 26 and I asked you ten.
The score is zero zero in this heavyweight match, though, wrapping up the early season first of two duels between these teams, Iowa at Iowa State.
Here on Iowa Public television, the second period began with wrestlers on their feet.
Again, that was the choice.
Here comes a little drag right there by unique and almost got in and hand almost turns it into a takedown himself.
On the edge of the mat, Heaney stuffs the head and saves himself from getting taken down.
Nice little drag attempt by Heaney, creating the action still zero zero naught naught here with about 2 seconds to go in the second period.
Panic in the red with the blue trim.
Iowa State athletic teams often use that blue trim now sometimes, which is not one of their, you know, colors, but that happens in the Iowa Hawkeyes, the black and silver, all gold.
Yeah, no extra lock up position a gap especially with off with the upper way It's the Bobby Douglas in that game we'll teach people to control an inside position can gets in on the single now he has to just keep Heaney in and he he is able to and he got it as close as close.
Oh that was close.
The question was whether a Windsor in here is here.
It is.
Once he drops down, watch his toes.
But watch Heaney right here.
What's he have to keep Pullman from saying that it's a takedown, doesn't have anything, doesn't have anything.
Whoa.
Well, so you'd say that's a good call?
No, I'd say he had two points.
Okay, I said that he.
Nick didn't have anything to make The referee say it wasn't two, it was two points.
But, you know, it's like a strike face down for sure.
It was 000 West hand against Heinicke.
Hey, Nick, Last year we started calling Heinicke for a while, even though we know the the all girl check way of saying it as he Nick and family said boys get it right and so we're happy to do that transformation in West Hand starting in the third period it was hands choice to be up in the second period, Helix chose to go down third period zero zero.
Interesting.
Just a little bit of favor in one way or the other.
I think that he McAdoo he Nick had the control going his way and then he lost it well and this is where hands are going to have to open up right now.
Nick has shown that he can wrestle in a big time meet like this.
He's shown a little veteran ship here.
You know, he's he's been here hand hasn't I think hands just kind of having a bust loose here if he's going to wind up in that state.
Yeah he's got to step it up and all of a sudden he's kind of like mentally slapping himself in the face saying, Hey, wait a minute, I'm better than this.
Yeah, I've got about a minute to go in the match and a one point lead for the cyclones here, folks, just up the road here, 3 to 1, actually.
3 to 1 lead to just no riding time and hand needs to take down two to get it to a tie.
And overtime, if that's what it takes to 3 to 1 lead for Heyneke Meyer by his glass by the beach, glanced at the clock a couple of times.
About 30 seconds to go, though.
Mason Warren He Nick Bryan's hand to his back.
Whoa!
Oh, look, at this point.
He got away.
But it's a three point NEARFALL oh on to settle it.
I think with about 10 seconds to go.
A big move by Trent.
Nick Right.
It's 5.0.
He's really stepped it up.
That was a it was good.
And there's a good move at half finishes with a takedown 959 Good win for China four good way to finish it for Iowa State.
Not the way Iowa wanted to finish it, but they had a good performance.
Very fine.
You're going to see those wrestlers against each other a lot more times and they're both going to be more improved as they go by nine to a win, adding three more points for the cyclones.
But it's 13 short.
There's the final score, Iowa, 26, Iowa State 13.
And that's the opening beat of our college wrestling season, the 21st year, bringing them to you on Iowa public television sports right now, 26 to 13.
And that final score was Trent Phenix doing the final three Iowa State watch, three of the upper waves, three in the last four.
They came on strong in the last half.
And Nick was probably an example of what Iowa State did in the last half.
He really scored a lot of points in the last period there.
He did.
In fact, the almost out of the match with that quick move.
That's right.
That's right.
And so really, Iowa State has a lot to build on from this.
They have, as we said, we talked about Iowa State turning the corner and they have there.
They're going to be a fine team and they have people last.
These are going to be two of the very, very fine program country in the next two or three years, just what you see around.
But it's nice to see the people outside.
See you.
Good to see you.
And merry Christmas to you.
Before we get back to the play, we've been able to say that before.
Oh, that's right.
That's right.
We'll have 10 minutes this year.
We also have the high school meets coming up at the National High School tournament later in the year.
Next season.
That's next year in 1997.
And we're going to be back in January with Augsburg and Watford and more of that big Division three meet Sunday at 2:00 that time.
Okay, So once again, the final score is 20 to 13.
Iowa over Iowa State College Wrestling will be back on on January 12th, where the two top teams in Division three Watford nights on October Sunday January 12th to do plan to watch and on for Tim Johnson and all the crew I'm Doc Brown saying good night for Iowa public television NFL and NFL NFL marketing back end funding for this program was provided by the some the thousand families who are members of Friends of Iowa Public Television who invite you to join them in support of quality public television programing.
