You might say it's Cael Sanderson, the sensational junior, is undefeated in his Iowa State career and is the most dominant wrestler in the country.
Sanderson has captured two NCAA titles and two outstanding wrestler awards in his first two years for the Cyclones.
Perfection might also be Jim Zaleski, where he has now coached the University of Iowa to three NCAA championships in his first three years.
Last season, the Hawkeyes crowned six All-Americans and won their ninth national title in the past ten years.
About as close to perfection as a team might ever get.
And today, Iowa State and Iowa seek perfection with a victory in this intense in-state rivalry.
We'll see which team finds Nirva It's college wrestling tonight from Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City, Iowa.
It's an interesting showdown between the fourth ranked Iowa State cyclones versus the third ranked Iowa Hawkeyes who?
Hello, everyone.
I'm Tim Johnson and welcome to our season debut of college wrestling.
I'm pleased to welcome my broadcasting partner, someone who is not unfamiliar with this great rivalry.
He was a national champion at Iowa State.
He was a national champion coach at the University of Iowa and most recently the USA Olympic coach.
Dan Gable.
Well, it's a big one and it's a big rivalry tonight.
It's always a big rivalry, but I think it's something special.
I don't know why, but they're always special.
This one, even though it looks like to be predictable on paper, I don't think it's going to be that predictable.
Well, Iowa State, they're a program that came so close to getting their first national championship in over a decade, but they just felt a little short.
But they return a great nucleus this year, and it's led by one of the leaders of £160 £5 junior Joe Haskett.
Well, I tell you, he's dangerous.
He throws the cradle from anywhere on top or when somebody shoots on him.
He himself is coming off a stinging loss at the NCAA championships, just like Iowa State.
So he's probably been working pretty hard for this year.
Well, let's talk about Iowa.
The Hawkeyes won their sixth straight NCAA championship and they return five All-Americans.
One of the great leaders on their team of £133 senior national champion Eric Jergens.
Well, Eric Jergens, there you see, use a patent ankle pick to score there, just like he has done throughout his career.
But I'll tell you, he's coming off a stinging loss himself, even though he's the national champion.
He just got knocked out of that number one position, losing to Oklahoma State just last week.
Well, it's also great to welcome our third partner on on our broadcasting team.
He was a national champion at Iowa State and he led his alma mater to a national championship as a coach.
Welcome, Jim Gibbons.
Thank you.
Tim, when you talk about these two teams, you have to go back to last year's one two NCAA finish and what a tournament it was coming down to the last day of the tournament.
Iowa State had the lead and Iowa came back and won the title.
But when you talk to the coaches, you hear the same thing.
You hear disappointment, disappointment from Iowa State, obviously, because they had a chance and they almost wrestled a perfect tournament.
But Iowa's tournament, they won the NCAA championship.
But what they didn't do is they had three number one seeds not win the NCAA tournament.
So what we're going to find out today who's been able to channel that disappointment in the right direction.
And we'll be right back, guys.
It's quick.

Okay.
We're going to start it out at £141.
But Doug Schwab is going against Zach Robison 149 exotic against Maldonado, T.J. Williams against Paul Sanderson and Ben Sherk right now against Joe Haskell, Gabe McMahon against Barry Parks.
And then we're moving up to Justin Smith versus Cale Sanderson.
In the process.
Will take on Thompson in our Jodi Smith matter versus Zach Moore and Eric Jergens against Cassidy, though 133 and that's rounded off him.
Thank you.
Thank you, Jim.
And we have the keys to victory right here.
And Dan, let's talk about it.
Well, obviously, in this meet, it's a little bit one sided either side and the bonus points will be a factor.
The swing matches are 149 to 174.
If somebody wins, both those, that could be big.
And this passion, I tell you, talking to Coach Douglas, he's got some passion.
I'll tell you after last year's stinging loss, he really feels like his kids have come back And Iowa coming off that loss has to give them an unbelievable amount of passion to turn around, see if they really are the defending champions.
Well, some tangible some intangible keys to victory there.
Thank you, Dan.
And here we are at 141.
That's where we start tonight.
And there's Doug Schwab from Iowa versus Zach Roberson from Iowa State.
Of course, Schwab being the national champion.
Two years ago, he was a state champion out of Osage and now he's a senior.
He came he's coming off a stinging defeat last year in the NCAA quarterfinals.
But he worked his way back like a champion and got third place.
And now he's wanting to show everyone that he can regain that top rung.
Well, I don't know.
But when he he's on a single leg, swats in on a single leg, and he's holding a little bit long, I need to be moving from a technical point of view.
He needs to be moving.
Roberson Roberson slowed him down a little bit, showing some good balance on some good confidence from a freshman point of view.
What's Roberson doing?
Well, he did well by controlling those the wrist right control the risk very well got his balance Schwab is continuing to put the pressure on good double shot by Robert Robertson good counter by Schwab Well Zach Roberson he knows about winning himself.
He was an undefeated four time champion, high school champion, and he's in for a physical match tonight.
He was a redshirt.
He's a redshirt freshman redshirted his freshman year, a true freshman last year and first time in the lineup against the Hawkeyes.
I don't I saw that.
I saw the weigh ins and they pulled out.
141 Schwab start clapping.
So I don't know if he's Ben wanted it or you just don't get himself psyched up a little bit.
But it's always up.
So I speak for somebody start off from one side or the other.
Nice shot, nice single leg.
Look, you know.
Schwab just a stalemate situation.
And just a moment ago, Dan, referee Mike Allen called Roberson for stalling.
And, you know, part part of that has to be backing up.
But part of that has to be the reputation of a young man like Doug Schwab, who's always going forward.
Don't you agree?
I think both a little bit.
But you also remember Mike Allen, the way he referees, especially in these dual meets, he keeps the action going and that's good for the crowd.
And something like this.
I think it's real important here is that from Iowa State's point of view is that he stays tough in positions like this and he just just did because Schwab had a great opportunity to score.
He still does, but he's still staying in there tough.
And that makes a big difference on on a lot of the meet score here as far early on did a great job of stopping Schwab.
He was on his head and he continued to circle in the same direction to stop that go behind Zach or over sent a freshman redshirt freshman out of Overland Park, Kansas just of took it down two points and falls behind two zero.
That's at first offensive score that makes so much a difference if you go into overtime.
New rule.
We'll talk about it as he goes on.
One escape makes the score 2 to 1 in favor of Schwab.
Doug Schwab, Iowa.
To Zach Roberson, freshman from Iowa State.
Good 2 to 1 with 15 seconds to go.
It's a pretty good match for for Roberson to only go into the second period behind 2 to 1 if he can go without getting taken down in the last 5 seconds here.
That's because Schwab does a great job at that.
But he's going to score, as you say.
Then you'd say that's a mental mental advantage for Roberson.
I would say so.
Well, not over Schwab, just the fact that he's staying in there and not giving up some close takedowns near takedowns in his own play.
There's a good head, high crotch to a head block.
And Randy Miller for two one half.
And Schwab has been known for writing that much, which puts Roberson Roberson back into the match with a with an escape.
If he decides to let it go, he's going to try to turn them.
Everybody goes back down.
He's been well coached there.
I can see it's one of lots of good situations and it's 2 to 2 right now.
31 second time advantage, no escape for Roberson.
So I've just kind of let him go.
And now it's 2 to 2, as Dan said, and big takedown.
Well, he's really whipped that time.
He whipped him hard to knock him off balance when he really was thinking about going to his back because he's going to back he gave up the two and that's the kind of the situation that Schwab would need to do to scare him.
A little more on those Let's go by.
Are those whip overs.
But Roberson's got some Iowa roots in that.
His high school coach, Tim Subotnick, wrestled at Walpole, Iowa.
That's where he's from.
And he's down in Kansas now and he was his high school coach.
So it's not a surprise.
He ended up coming up to the Iowa way in back for three score and there's a point stolen from him I'm not so sure he stole.
He's just not going at the same pace.
Not going at the same pace.
He's in good condition.
So I don't think weight is a factor for Robertson here at all, because he's I think he's been up 33 earlier in the year.
There's a shot.
And again, the clock's ticking down.
He's not finishing that well.
He needs to up put the shoulder in and squeeze in the clock time here.
Referee won't let it go very long.
Score is 5 to 3 in favor of Schwab from Iowa and he's got 43 seconds of riding advantage.
5 to 3 with 22 seconds left in the second period.
It doesn't take long for Schwab to add up some points sometimes, but this is a guy that is doing a good job of a counter and out of a lot of situations.
And I think just like that, he's got to their right to 9 seconds to go.
That makes a big difference.
On whether he's going to get bonus points Going to that last period is a real crucial call coming up right now.
Whether you take down a neutral no much about Robinson, if he's a good writer, you would take neutral.
Oh well he chooses doubt the coaches if they know that he's not a writer.
The swap that's one area you don't want him to spend much time in without trying to get a major here.
And they knew that.
They knew the position.
One score 8 to 3 in favor of Schwab.
It's a tough, tough way to start out your career against a national champion.
And this is the third cyclone in a row that Schwab has met, that this is their first year in the lineup.
And so it's a tough way to be introduced to the Big Ten and Jason, both wrestlers look a little weary.
Robert Schwab's not as dominant as he has been in the past as far as moving and controlling.
And it was a good shot by Roberson, almost had the ankle but lost it.
And so Schwab's in a good position now to get to the stalemate and the referee, you know, breaks that position.
He's going to need a couple of takedowns and maybe get the 10 seconds right in time up for their shot.
This match, I'm sure that the Hawkeyes were thinking bonus points and that does not look like that right now.
Well, we've seen Schwab rack up a lot of points switched off from the pick that wasn't working.
He went to a different tactic, try to put a bear hug and it worked.
He's got to he got the the the majors decision.
Right.
If he rides him out right now.
But he's going to let him go right in time.
Yeah.
So, yeah, you're right.
It's going to take him down again.
Right there he is on the edge.
On the edge.
A big, big move.
Low points is doing a good job at times.
It down.
Okay, we come back.
This could be big for both teams.
They came to for but an extra point.
It's a seven point lead for Schwab he needs to take a three could be a factor here.
He's in a good position here and he's going to get to take the big, big score right there, 13 four.
Even if he escaped.
Oh, he gets a reversal.
Wow.
He did a good job of research.
And that was a great job by both wrestlers and a victory for Doug Schwab from Iowa.
He will score from kingdom below with the right side that gives the Iowa Hawkeyes a lead after the first match four zero over the cyclones.
The victory for Doug Schwab over Zach Roberson.
Now we're ready for 149 and this is one of the featured matches, one of the keys to make that you mentioned, Dan, Bill and Maldonado against Mike Zach that account of Montana 149 and below that all guys molded out of out of East Chicago Central High School of Hammond Indiana.
There's a little history with these guys, like when they've wrestled three times.
Zach went in two previous matches, but all 31. pointer, close matches, the overtime matches over time.
In the NCAA last year Mike Zach, a junior out of Great Falls, Montana, Billy Maldonado, also a junior at a Hammond, Indiana.
And as Dan said, they know each other.
I'm Tim Johnson.
You're hearing the expert and analysis by Dan Gable.
But I like Iowa State.
Maldonado seems to be a little bit more the aggressor early on as far as shots, not really full shots, half shots, but more than that, it's Zach.
Alex doing a pretty good job of a block.
And here's the first shot by Zadig.
They just got stopped and penetrate offense.
Look for another four time state champion Mike Zadig not of Montana is who he said He went 156 matches and only lost one in his high school career.
His only loss was the freshman brother of year was a NCAA Champion bills ad it was on the national team right now be in.
We're here at Carver Hawkeye Arena for the Iowa Iowa State dual meet.
I'm Tim Johnson along with Dan Gable and Jim Gibbons bringing you this great wrestling match in college wrestling, our season debut.
This is one of those matches, Those first offense offensive points I talked about could make a difference.
If you go into overtime, you'll have your choice in the tiebreaker whether you want to take top down or top.
If you score the first offensive points for the rule, one minute, overtime plus 32nd tiebreaker first offense points will determine if it's a draw with no offensive points.
Then it goes to the flip of the coin.
Again, 1 minutes, only one minute, two in overtime compared to last year.
We'll keep you informed.
We'll walk you through anything that happens and tell you why.
As far as overtime is concerned, One of the reasons we're talking about it is we pointed out that these two Vatican Maldonado were over were in overtime in the NCAA last year.
Jim Gibbons, what do you see out there?
Well, Tim, what I see is probably the same thing.
Dances year two.
If you recall, last year in the Google meet, Zedek really got after him, got up the first takedown here in this match is starting to look a lot like the overtime match we saw in the NCAA tournament.
Just note both guys just fighting for position, not be able to get anything out, getting offense off right now.
Both of them look like they're doing like half shots and we're kind of picking and choosing and they're going to wait really turn it on when they want to.
But it's kind of a waste and not good match time.
But at the same time, there's good tactics involved here.
Both wrestlers are are obviously respect each other.
We're approaching the end of the first period where it leaves the scoring 020 between Billy Maldonado, Mike Zedek.
This is the second match of the evening in the Iowa State.
Dual meet Iowa leads four zero after £141 match down.
Maldonado Choosed Joe's down and zadig on top here trying to ride out both wrestlers actually going pretty tough here.
Sadie kind of looked over one, no others to push him away and all.
They told him to write him a little bit and he's doing a pretty good job weren't making a the wear on him real quick that Iowa state coach is pleading with Mike Allen to call locking hands as they went down to the mat.
No call and there's a 33 seconds of writing time into the second period credited to Mike Zedek from Iowa.
Still zero zero.
I think that was one of those calls by the referee that didn't know what it was but was all the way on the mat or was it up, you know, two or three inches and it's okay to lock your hands.
But if it hits and you don't release and, you know, if you want to do make a call one way or the other, he could have.
But but he stuck with it.
I think.
A good car, good hand control there.
Maldonado able to get out before that lined up a minute writing time 52 seconds.
Writing time doesn't make a lot of sense to write to ride that card for 52 and kind of let him go as easy as he did, you know, maybe another 15 to 20 seconds, a good hard right.
And would have a game that minute and a good game.
A little bit of an edge.
Maldonado was working hard, but I just don't think you know where you're at sometimes in the match and you just got to know where you're at.
It's always you're listening to the coach.
Coach Dan Gable, 15 time national champion, coach for the University of Iowa, now expert analyst.
And we're in a great season debut for college wrestling with the Iowa State dummy Always a great coach by Bobby Douglas, Iowa State Jim Zaleski of Iowa and two highly ranked wrestlers right here at £149, scores one zero in favor of Billy Maldonado from Iowa State.
Conditioning may be a factor here.
Both wrestlers look appear to be but similar in nature from that point of view.
Right now, that's you know, we're still still got another period yet.
But at the second period now we have ZT going down and you're looking at Jim Zaleski and Bobby Douglas, the leaders of the teams that Zaleski is taken off as a sport.
Go up and down Nice crowd tonight opening dual meet for the home will meet for the Hawkeyes and figure skating will find the 3 seconds in court.
That's pretty fast, boys.
One one.
I know, Mike said his father, Bob Sadek, is here from Great Falls.
It's a long ways to travel, but he's been used to coming here with his two sons here over the years.
I might get in on the legs, but Maldonado able to ward him off and now down on the nose, thumbs up, thumbs down, post from the edge of the mat.
Pulling him back on is doing a good job of coming up with that ankle.
Wow.
This is this is a tough situation here.
Tough situation keeps coming up, doesn't he?
Oh, wow.
Look at this.
Look at this.
Good wrestling on the edge of the mat by both wrestlers.
Good wrestling, good wrestling by both out of bounds.
Wow, wow, wow.
And it takes something out of somebody.
We'll see what happens after this.
One minute.
Five to go, four, one one.
No riding time advantage.
I think somebody is going to try to muster up this takedown here in this last minute vault.
Nobody has the offensive points and not going to get the advantage.
It's going to go down to the flip of the coin.
So someone's going to try to get a takedown here.
Probably.
Jim Gibbons, give it to your view from out on the floor.
Well, you know, this is the first throw to victory.
Okay.
That was picture book.
That was a picture book technique.
One angle to the other.
Just pick it up, use the momentum, took it right to his rear.
Just don't it doesn't get any better from a technical point of view, this match isn't over yet.
All it takes is an escape and an eight or reversal to put him in position.
And boy, I'll tell you, he's got a lot of action there now.
You know, laid it out there 15 seconds.
The crowd's getting into it and now riding kind of sandals was adding pivotal matches.
That's right.
And the home crowd brought it out the attic.
You did a good job of riding tonight.
There is a key right there, right, guys?
You know, he certainly did it.
That tough crowd likes it.
It's one of the key matches.
But that where we're at, Iowa State.
Iowa State, the winner of Iowa is Mike Shattuck over Iowa State, Billy Maldonado, the final score for 8 to 1, you're going to have to shake coaches.
It's all about that rule.
You got to have a pretty good sportsman's handshake.
If you don't, you lose a team point.
Well, referees doing a pretty good job there.
You had a couple of situations he could have actually took advantage of, but he did.
And the score now, as you see it, Iowa Hawkeyes seven.
Here's a picture you were talking about.
Well, there's a low angle shot and you go, what right was the momentum even though you can't see it?
See, most young people shoot and pull back that shot and went in with that penetration right to the other leg.
Here we are at, oh, £157.
T.J. Williams getting a shot by Paul Sanders.
Anderson came to wrestle Sanders and came to wrestle.
He shot right immediately.
Well, one thing for our viewers, that was a pivotal match at 149, but of course, Anderson, victory here could even things up again, couldn't It?
Certainly could, because we're the favorite wrestle here.
But you look at Sanders, his record, he's 14 at all.
And, you know, he's into it.
He's been around a long time, just like Williams been around.
He's lost to Williams by kind of big scores and close scores.
We're talking about TJ Williams and team.
That was a risky move by Vice Anderson from a defensive point of view.
He won it actually went through with it was going to hopefully get a roll through, could have put himself in danger but did a great job of coming off his back there for just a two point takedown for Williams.
Two seniors in action here, Cole Sanders and a senior out of Heber City, Utah, one of three Sanderson brothers that's been wrestling for Iowa State in the last several years.
TJ Williams, one of the Williams brothers, been wrestling for the Hawkeyes, really got his arm.
He really had his arm cut and really did a good job there.
But Anderson did a good job of breaking that grip.
Williams had a close match against Oklahoma State.
He won 4 to 1, but it was tight right to the end.
The team I know Coach Zaleski would like to see him open up a little more.
And Sanderson's been having a good year and he can't help but rub off.
Be pretty tough guy hanging around is his brothers.
Well, T.J. Williams looks like he's putting a little bit of pressure and a lot of hurt on Cole Sanderson early on.
And so it should please Coach Zaleski, the kind of action he's seen out of Williams.
There's Joe Williams, brother, three time national champion for the Iowa Hawkeyes, and now a coach who's very nice, got coach Bobby Douglas talking to referee Mike Allen about texting fingers, pulling back of fingers.
Yeah, I hope it's going to you know, it'll open it'll open up an avenue for if he doesn't grab four fingers know there's a lot of other things that that warning that was an official warning of what to do but Bobby do wrong.
Well he probably didn't phrase what he needed to phrase Right.
He went about it the correct manner.
Basically, he should have said, you know, I'm not sure what I see out there, but it looks like he could cause the injury to his fingers the way he's doing it.
What do you think he should let the referee then to be aware of it instead?
I kind of accused him of something and he just didn't want him to be able to stop the match in time.
Accused of something.
He's the referee.
He's in charge.
I see something out there.
I call it Skate by Sanderson Matches intentional release makes the score 2 to 1.
This is our third match of the evening.
And this is the third four time state champion We've seen T.J. Williams, a four time state champion out of Harvey, Illinois, Mount Carmel High School.
And when you're a four time Illinois state champion, that's something special.
Cole Sanderson was a three time state champion in Utah.
That's something special to tell you.
A lot of championships amongst these two teams.
That's why for a great dual meet, it's why I think we have a coach coach offered here tonight.
I believe watching getting ready for the basketball game tomorrow night with Iowa State and he has his athletes here, although I don't think he had seen a wrestling match before he came to Iowa.
And I know that he respects the work ethic of wrestling because from what I've heard he said to his basketball team, if you want to see what hard work is, go watch the Iowa Hawkeyes wrestle.
And so he's seen two hard working, top ranked teams.
Tonight, we're at £157.
The Iowa State dual meet, it's TJ Williams versus Cole Sanderson.
We're in the end of the first period.
The score is 2 to 1 in favor of T.J. Williams and the team score is seven zero.
Iowa in in the lead at the end of the first period.
Well actually tactics kind of cause that scoring situation as Cody Sanders and his brother all-American in the national finals last year going to graduate school at Iowa State University right now told me today he was taking some genetics classes.
He said he might be a little bit over his head, but I don't think so.
Shot by TJ Williams.
Both Anderson slips out or he got the escape, slips out and gets almost a reversal by Williams and it looked like Sanders net escape that way So eight for Williams no actually Sanderson's shot that first shot which put him in close position.
Williams stopped him when he was backing out.
He did what's called a shot and got that takedown, but otherwise there wasn't any moves in the first period.
And some people like to slow Williams down by just hanging out.
And that's probably a tactic that didn't slow him down because it put him in a position to score the rest of the period.
Did what coaches I know like when Williams gets aggressive because he has the tools and really is able to do a lot of technique they're good shots.
He's a tool but oh not sure what's happening here.
Good scramble by Sanders doing a good job.
Whoa, Doing a good job here to get his hips down.
He's going to score.
It could be.
Oh, wow, This is pretty wild.
What we've got to watch neither this 31.
So this is pretty wild here.
You got to shoot that ankle.
Yeah, this is pretty wild.
Oh, boy.
I'll tell you, I'd watch that ankle there that he could get hurt there.
This is pretty good.
Scramble.
Williams did make a shot, but Sanders has done a great job of turning this around.
Both wrestler, both wrestlers are really utilizing a lot of energy and talent here, letting it go.
They're letting it go by The longer one of the longer that knee, that knee I don't know if it's a stalemate, but it is potentially dangerous.
Potentially dangerous.
Joe has to get warmed up.
He's looking to there's the injury timeout.
What do they get a minute?
They've got a minute and a half.
But there's a rule on that as well.
And that's it's not like it's it's not a new rule.
But the injury time.
But if there's more than that you can't be worrying.
Yeah you have to show that level for the world in 25 years of leadership also that they ran a reminder today that at the intermission we'll be bringing you a 25th anniversary flashback.
We'll show you our college wrestling schedule.
Jim Gibbons will present a new feature entitled Where Are They Now?
Today, we'll get current with former wrestlers Dave Palumbi.
As you and Chuck Yeager live, Iowa.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address, what you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the World Wide Web.
Here we are back in 157.
TJ Williams from Iowa, leading Cole Sanders from Iowa State, 3 to 1 third match of the evening in the Iowa State to Iowa, leading seven zero as a team or ending the second period.
And the score three one here at 157.
TJ Williams leading he's got a minute writing time a minute for writing time so that could be a factor.
What he decides to choose here I guess that's Sanders has his his choice so it doesn't matter if they want it to come down to what comes to his writing.
Time could be a factor.
As I said, if Williams gets hurt again in this match, it would be the second injury.
With that in mind, the choice goes to Sanders.
Whether he wants to change positions top, bottom or neutral has a good shot by Williams two point break on who half way or a little bit into the third period, Williams takes a five to lead a £157.
And as Dan said, he's got riding time as well.
So effectively about a four point lead for PJ Williams.
Now here's one here looking for this one illegal hole.
I missed it.
I had have illegal hold by t.j. Williams makes the score five three.
Not sure what happens Anderson still down number two go out five four.
Now the escape purposely led up by PJ Williams.
The score is five for a minute 29 a writing time.
So really T.J. Williams from Iowa had a two point lead, Minute 11 left in the last period.
Sanderson's going to have to probably come after him again, which usually puts Williams in a good position to score on on a defensive type situation.
But you have got his choice here.
Could you call it the stolen or cut?
Take it down.
He's in all the way.
Whoa.
Wow.
Wow.
Talk about power, quickness.
Wow.
Good moves by Northwestern.
Great scramble there.
Credit to both guys.
They were going for it.
Score seven four in favor of Williams Myles minute 40 writing time with 30 seconds left in the third period.
Uphill climb for Cole Sanderson.
If he's going to pull this one out, it's going to take a reversal and put back points to getting back in or escape in a big, big day cup.
Got it.
Back to your set top.
You may come on over to Good Escape.
120 seconds.
Seven, five.
Back it up for you to back up like that.
You read Mike Allen's mind.
He called it It's morning.
There's a shot of a shot.
He took a high crotch shot.
Is He's a dangerous shot at the end of a match up.
You know you tactics should be swing sweep single, double legs, high crotch gets an angle and it's tough to do it.
It's got to finish with writing time.
Final score ten five in favor of Williams.
Now the score is Iowa ten Iowa State zero after three matches disappointed Sanderson here 14 to all going into that match it's got to be a little disappointed.
Coaches in the Hawkeyes have to be a little bit happy with the way I'm tired get a little more aggressive that time.
Got three or four or five times.
Here we go at 165.
And here's the what we were telling you about.
Where are they now?
Jim Gibbons will present a new feature entitled Where Are They Now?
Today?
We'll current with former wrestlers Dave Powell of ASU and Chuck Yeager of Iowa.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address and let you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the world Wide Web plan to watch today at intermission.
Here we are, £165, the fourth match of the Iowa State dual meet here at Carver Hawkeye Arena in Iowa City.
We have two time all-American Joe Haskett from Iowa State going against Ben Church out of Wilton, Iowa.
And this is a key match and a great chance for Iowa State as they will be heavily favored to win.
And they're looking for bonus points probably, aren't they any time has it gets out there it looks for, you know, its ability to cradle you know sure as this is a big meet point you know he just had a match with Oklahoma State.
It went overtime.
He was he rustled up Russell, the guy that lost the match, and he's in on a low single and does this this is where guy cuts the corner and does different type of moves and this is going to be all potentially dangerous.
It looked like it was going to come up on top there, but obviously somebody had a bad knee and a hole in his leg.
They're pretty good.
Both juniors.
Joe Haskett out of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio, wrestled for a very traditional boy high school Jesuit.
Whoa.
And he's got a little locked up, right?
Yeah, he's.
I've never seen him lose too many cradles, but he lost one there at two back points, along with this takedown that makes the score four 0 to 4, takedown two for near fall in that cradle.
And now he's on top like a blanket.
Well, he's a good writer and he says he spends a lot of people those cradles.
I'm surprised that shirt, you know, he was able to break that grip.
It, be able to come out of there.
But you're not going to win a match by just breaking some of his grip from cradle, trying to keep getting ten shirts, not going out there to try to keep it.
And he's obviously coming out to try to win it.
The coaches have declared not a lot of experience here with shirts in college wrestling, yet he's had a bad day.
He's been on the sidelines, wrestle behind some people, beat down a couple of weights behind Williams.
So that's a big move for him.
First, experience wise, you're listening to Dan Gable along with Jim Gibbons.
I'm Tim Johnson.
It's college wrestling, our season debut at Carver Hawkeye.
We're in the fourth match of the evening out of ten, £165.
He's working a technique here that he scores a lot of back points.
He's got.
Does he looks at that?
He can roll him.
He's going to put him on his back and get some near-fall points, but tries to go one way or the other.
So there it is.
The other.
Yeah, there's back points being scored.
It's just getting ready to say, don't you think they probably worked on this in the room said Jerk, this is what's going to happen.
But when you can, when you're mean.
Jim Gibbons Well, you can work on these things when you're in the wrestling room.
But I tell you what, it's hard to duplicate.
Somebody like Joe Hess gets grip out there and you just got an extremely powerful grip and he can put it on you.
If not positions.
But thing I'm impressed.
What I see here is that he's getting off to a quick start.
He's already avenged last year's loss to the national champion flip flop in Wisconsin.
Yeah, he's Been ranked number one right now.
The number one wrestler in the country.
You see, we're still in the first period.
It's seven zero in favor of Haskett.
He's already got about two.
Well, he'll have 2 minutes of riding time at the end of the first period.
Great choice.
He's a first for you out there.
He has him up.
He actually blocked one wind roll the other way.
Haskett does a lot of Penn, but three point NEAR-FALL.
He used a good leg in to drive forward to try to lift him.
And then when he reacted with his hip the other way, he rolled in the way that he reacted, which means he's like you said, you go either way, Oh, Haskett is out positioning shirt here in this match all the all the positions so far that have been crucial, Haskett has been able to win the position just like that one and didn't let him go.
I mean, Sherk almost out has says no, I like it where I'm at.
I'm going to stay on top.
And he's a lot of pressure on him.
We're here at carbon See that ankle being hooked right there?
That is makes the difference whether you can ride a guy the weights forward off the hips and you hook that ankle in, it's very difficult to get out.
All right.
We're here at Carver Hawkeye Arena, £165.
The score is ten zero.
Iowa leads Iowa State after three matches.
We're in the fourth match of the evening.
And we have Joe Haskett from Iowa State looking to give Iowa State its first points on the board.
He's ahead seven zero in the second period with a minute left.
He's got the same move on it and he's able to do the same thing again.
And he's going to get himself another three point here for one.
Now, if he was to go up by 15 points with these back points, that's five points for the team, right?
Right.
With call the technical foul.
And with that points, you get to five points.
You know, that's the direction he's headed.
You go 3 minutes and 10 seconds.
Right now.
He's one of the one of the essentials in college wrestling oriented and scholastic wrestling is that bottom position.
You're going to be in a match.
You have to be able to get out there, called a shirt for style.
I think it's pretty difficult to get out with that leg in the other arm tied up.
He just getting over position, position.
And you bring up a good point.
Then there's a difference between being overpowered and stolen.
And I would say right now that Haskett is really overpowering.
Sherk Out positioning.
And it's that's a hard call to take if you are if your shirt there is one of those things, though, that Mike Allen keeps the match going.
And in a national tournament, I'll think you make that call but in duel mean he wants action wants to create excitement and I think from a coaching point of view yeah that's that's not bad.
Our referee pointed into the second period the score is 11 zero.
Here.
We'll see a little more action from Joe.
Same thing.
He puts that leg in, he gets that leg and tiny rolls and he has that risk control and he's getting that back points.
Three.
That's six of those points right now.
Sherk obviously took standing.
I believe that that was the he's giving him an angle.
He's giving him a little bit of an angle on that front headlock.
And that's a mistake.
You give somebody an angle and they're going to beat Taylor.
Yeah, they're going to beat you with it.
I don't know.
I think Sherk is a little bit out of it, mind wise right now because he's given him a little bit more than he should be.
Jim.
Jim Gibbons You want to ask Dan something?
Yeah.
Dan, it's pretty interesting here.
A 13 point lead.
You've got to you've got a chance to get an extra team point here.
Are you are you communicating that to your wrestler here about if he gets him down there to keep him down there, not just go for the fall for the till.
Where are you going to let him go here, it looks like.
But yeah, you're looking definitely one way or the other.
He didn't let it go.
But you know, you're either looking for the nearfall.
You're looking for the stalling call which has been there.
So you know you got that going for you too.
And it's going to be there in a minute.
25.
If he doesn't turn him, I'll be surprised.
And Coach Solecki, you know, obviously he wants to keep that off the other way.
But as you open up, do you open up a potential foul situation, too?
So it's got it's going to get the call right there.
Definitely dangerous on, I don't know, the knee, right ankle or what.
Not sure what's going on there.
Both coaches encouraging their wrestler to take it up a notch as we talked about Joe Haskett wanting that extra point now, a takedown and ride would give him or takedown would give him the technical right?
Actually, I think I would have kept him down just from the standpoint that.
Well, he gave it up pretty quick there.
Well, I don't know if you get or not he did.
Yeah, he gave it up.
I think that's it.
Well, not yet.
He's going to have to ride him out there, too, to get the full vantage point.
He sure is not in the match mentally as much as he should be.
I was I was point of view, obviously, about giving up a couple of things to take that one where he could afford a little bit more.
But, you know, it's really really take it to him as far as positioning advantage.
So, you know, it's understandably somewhat what's going on.
But you're right at the end with all stalling points, you know, don't look good.
17 to 1 technical foul.
That's five points for the Iowa State cyclones that Hesketh just gave up.
And that means that the score now is Iowa ten.
Iowa State five.
There's Joe Haskett big win for the two time all-American.
And now we go through 174 key key match right.
I would say you're right.
This is the one that, you know, one of the key ones of 49.
We and I will one that and believe this is another one.
That's one that is pivotal part.
There's the keys we're talking about and where we've got 149 Iowa won that 174.
Here we are gave McMahon from Iowa senior out of Alaska up against Perry Parks a senior out of Florida from one side of the state to the to the other.
Extreme wrestling here.
And it's an extreme match.
We're in the fifth match of the evening, the scores ten two five Iowa over Iowa State Perry parks in the red from Iowa State versus Gabe McMahon, Miwa in the black and gold.
I believe McMahon has a couple of wins over over parts and he's in our high crotch not to do it, but Parks doing a pretty good job.
Missed his ankle, sort of had his ankle.
No points, no point that big big counter by my park did a good job.
The high crotch right.
It's a pretty fast paced match right now.
I grudge gets it down pretty quickly but I've made it to switch as well as he wants to go 200 both and it's to 2 to 0.
Gabe McMahon early lead for Iowa that way both wrestlers have been around both wrestlers of that.
I think close to being all Americans are once the matches at the end of the day, a pivotal match for both teams.
So there'll be an intermission after this one ran for this match.
10 minutes you go, you're second in the Big Ten last year for the Hawkeyes.
You heard it from the head of the Soviet Union High in third.
What looks like going to be another takedown.
Do you know the one he took down and for McMahon, one escape for Parks scored 41, and McMahon seems to be working hard on top.
Well, he had a Turk there when he missed, he slipped it out.
Obviously, you work there, but no escape again, because he hasn't got the all the writing time of 50 seconds.
But it's, you know, it's piling up there.
Coach, Coach Douglas is very high on parks this year.
He's done a pretty good job and he says he's much improved.
So far.
The match hasn't shown that, but, you know, maybe in advance as well.
But earlier earlier this year, Matt McMahon keeping pretty good position, kind of waiting for this is a crucial 30 seconds into the match right here, his last 30 seconds, an important time to break through in this match right now.
Wrestlers kind of needing needed break breakthrough in their in their careers.
Really.
Time's running out for a few seniors here trying to win a big match at seconds And if he if the man scores on this and if you get past came up them a little bit he's got a great locked up he's got to play to locked up and he's broke the cradle He can give up a reversal.
Wow Got over his step extended got overextended there.
That was a big, big reversal for Iowa State to add to their on that exchange.
6 to 4 at the end of the first period in favor of McMahon from Iowa.
Actually, McMahon was going for a fall and got out of position and Parks fell him over high and utilized his hips and went around for the reversal.
And this is their third meaning.
Parks and McMahon McMahon leading two zero in the series tonight, leading six four in the second period, we're at £174.
Carver, Hawkeye Arena, Iowa versus Iowa State.
It's college wrestling with Dan Gable.
Jim Gibbons and I'm Tim Johnson know yeah go score seven four now after that skate by man got to hit got it.
You make one mistake when you're playing the take down LED up game and puts the other athletes right back in the match.
That's right It's another shot, another good counter.
But the cover did a good job.
Marx almost scored up reversal, right?
A takedown actually off that flurry but then is able to come back and that was a pretty big takedown there because that's giving him a chance to build up that right time, even though he doesn't have it yet.
He's up near the one minute, but they let me go before the one minute with you again.
They're not being very aware of that minute.
It's early season, something you want on the board during the national tournament, during the conference, 30 seconds left in the second period, the score in favor of the Hawkeye.
Oh, Gabe McMahon, he's ahead of Cory Parks, 9 to 5.
He just really hitting that side by side switch legs, I believe.
I think that switch lead legs at this point in time, he's had like five or six shots and he scores a takedown here.
There's only 15 seconds, but there's a good counter, actually good contraction, well back over 600 ball.
So, wow, that's a good flurry here.
And wow, this is a good flurry to take a lot out of both athletes.
It's not going to score here.
It's going to keep you back in the match.
McMahon almost had that.
Parks did a good job of keeping that keeping him in.
A reminder that today at intermission, we'll be bringing you a 25th anniversary flashlight flashback.
We'll show you our college wrestling schedule.
Jim Gibbons will present a new feature entitled Where Are They Now?
Today, we'll get current with former wrestlers Dave Pal of ASU and Chuck Yeager of Iowa.
Plus, we'll give you our Web page address and let you know about some of the ways you can interact with us on the World Wide Web plan to plan to watch today at intermission.
Here we are at £174, Gabe McMahon from Iowa, leading 9 to 5 over Perry Park.
He's got right up.
He's got right in time a minute, 15.
And that could come crucial in this match.
He's doing a good job of writing that up that arm and controlling their parts kind of hangs out looking for an opening and kind of counters and moved out of that third world escape, catch and release.
So you get that 9 to 6 now right in time in favor of McMahon.
So it's effectively 10 to 6 four points down Iowa State wrestler today.
Park Marks really needs to get some offense going here.
He's going to get back in the match.
So far it's been all big man offense.
Now parks being down big plus right time he's going to need a quite a few takedowns in the band still being aggressive and it's a warning against Iowa State the post office can't be happy about that.
There's another angle shot down the final time.
McMahon's moving pretty well.
He's out after scoring nine points and oh, now would you say the Stallings on McMahon though you started that He showed signs of it there but there he's got a nice finish high school and I tell you he's he's unimpressive he's been impressive because Coach Douglas thought this could be a matchup they could could win and they really haven't been in the bench.
No.
My man been in control the whole time.
He's up 11 to 6.
He's got riding time.
There's 10 seconds left.
He's going to ride him out, it looks like.
And that'll make the score 12 to 6, another three points for the Hawkeyes, both pivotal matches.
They won the Hawkeyes and then won the key matches.
Now the score is 13 to 5.
And for five matches, five to go.
Iowa Hawkeyes.
Iowa State, five.
First of all, I was 12 that the University of Montana has it, but there's no way I got Jimmy Zaleski here, the leading coach up 12 six coaching for us, five matches.
We had two of them.
We considered toss up matches.
We're able to bring them down.
So those are big matches, you know, as Erickson and miles away as Russell Tough and McMahon and Mark coming on so other two big matches for us we needed those matches.
What do you expect from your guys the rest the way out?
We got to fight hard you know their favorite next weight classes, you know, pretty heavily.
We got to fight hard and know stay in those matches and try to win them.
Congratulations.
Thank you.
Thank you.
Jim Gibbons.
Let's take a blast from the past.
The year is 1981 and it's Iowa versus Iowa State.
ASU is ahead 19 to 14 heading into heavyweight.
And Iowa's all-American Lou Bannock needs a fall against the Cyclones Dave Osborne to win it for the Hawkeyes.
After that course of down and down, down.
And he locked that well at the Far Side Cradle again.
Now Osunbor has Matic in trouble, bad actors in trouble.
And I believe that he might have got better if he'd gone the other way.
Well, he got it, but he got it all on him.
He got to do.
And getting ball boy.
Now it's good if he if this happened it could be Iowa State's me.
He could throw the ball here without question.
It looks like it's pretty close now.
He's in a pretty good spot with a lot of weight bearing down there on Lou Bennett.
Watch that referee's hand watch that.
And it's Iowa State.
Oh, look at that crowd.
Holy cow.
It's an upset.
Iowa State wins on a last minute foul by Dave Hosenball.
It's 13 to 5 in favor of Iowa over Iowa State here at Carver Hawkeye Arena.

Well, it was a good first half, Dan and we're getting ready now for this 184 and that means Carl Sanders Mile State against Desmond Smith Mile.
Well Carl Sanderson is ready to go and so is Smith.
But now we'll find out who's really ready to go here in a bit, in a few minutes.
Here we are at Carver Hawkeye, ready for £184.
Carl Sanderson, two time undefeated national champion, only a junior, two time outstanding wrestler in the NCAA tournament against Desmond Smith from Iowa, £184.
And we're often going Sanderson is a flurry.
I mean, he's a speed.
He came out dirty.
He started moving in, put motion in there.
So far, Smith is did a good job until he let him in on his ankle.
And now it's going to be a scramble.
That's Sanders is good on scrambles.
The last year when these two wrestled the chaos Henderson didn't have much problem he technical fault Desmond Smith and he's won all 90 of his matches for Iowa State in his two plus years on the varsity Hawkeyes really need Smith to avoid you know, giving up too much here.
But they've done a good job of getting out in front 13 to 5 after five matches.
Go, go, go.
One, two.
Oh, he's got him.
Tighten that up.
That have gotten tied on that.
Have you.
Roll through on it on your half.
He's got it.
He's got it son.
He's tight on it and tight on it.
He's tight on it and it's he's in trouble.
He's got a lot of time a minute 30 left in the first period already.
Desmond Smith on his back he'll Sanderson has Smith in trouble looking to put the shoulder blades down to the mat and you get the slap from Mike Allen, the referee plays a good job of keeping good been there.
He's really got it tight start roll around with the half gets himself in trouble.
A lot of pressure from the shoulder there from Sanderson He's got it covered Well a lot of courage by the bottom wrestler there he it's he has not given up.
He's fighting hard trying to get that shoulder.
Three.
Oh, he's really got it tight.
That tight was real close.
Referee's really right there.
He looks like he's got he looks like he's got him.
And then oh, six points on the sidelines and they needed every one of those.
Neil Sanderson Most likely Iowa cyclones to win Iowa State cyclone to win.
But he certainly didn't hurt the cyclones to get six points from him.
That makes the score 13 to 11.
Now after closing the gap, the cyclones hit and here they are with another favored wrestler, Zach Thompson, national runner up.
Zach Here's the pin dance.
We got him on a tight what I call both legs in chest chest It's tough to get out of there.
Smith got off his back for almost a minute.
Bottom line was that half Nelson that he got, he needed to peel that half didn't need to roll through with it, put him in danger.
When he rolled through it, it stuck him right on the far point.
He rolled through Sanders and showed that he's used to be in there and really did a good job of creating a position to get the fall.
We have a difference in stature here.
We have a tall, lanky Ryan full size from Iowa versus a stocky Zach Thompson.
Thompson, the NCAA runner up last season at 197.
And that's the weight class we're at.
We're in the seventh match of the evening and the score is 13 Iowa State 11, New York Carver, Hawkeye Arena.
Thompson's looking to get those double unders, do a little whip work, shoots a high crotch, and he shoots a snap single and then likes to come up real quick and catch you there.
So far, Full SAS has done a good job of keeping him out of scoring position.
I think Thompson is going be able to keep up this pace.
He's at a pretty, pretty core pace right here.
Pull to it's a takedown for Thompson now breaking out made a mistake there shot got on his knees and reached on him out of sync.
Ed's high school big wrestling tradition in the Cleveland, Ohio, area took advantage of us being out of position, did a little whip over, gave him the opportunity to score those easy points here.
Guards gaping holes at Granby Roll good hip heist and a lot of power there and get out for one Lucas head scores 2 to 1 in favor of the Iowa State cyclones.
Zach Thompson pulls us along with his There's got that double underhook when we're to go one way and back the other.
He's looking for a lift as well.
But he's warning against Iowa, where Thompson put a lot of pressure on him in the game.
He certainly is one guy this the national finals.
The other guys just first time.
He's an incredible Hawkeyes.
So you know, it's a lot of trash.
No points yet.
There's going to be points right there.
You're we were talking it's important that the Iowa wrestler keep his head in the game here mentally, right?
Well, he's just coming off a match down in Oklahoma State where he didn't keep his head in the game.
So it's important for him to.
Yes.
To make sure that he learns a little bit about what's going on during the meet so he doesn't lose his cool, doesn't lose his control.
He's able to stay in there and compete with Paul.
Zaleski said several times about learning how to compete.
Doesn't look good right there.
What he's blocking with the head.
Yeah.
Thompson's being extremely aggressive, extremely aggressive, and end up calling for a point.
If he doesn't do it, get out of there.
Guard Point stalling.
Start over.
5 to 2.
Now, we're in the first period.
20 seconds left, the whole £87.
Iowa versus Iowa State and the Hawkeyes lead 13 to 11.
Well, to the center, 10 seconds to five to score.
That shot.
And in the first period, the score is five two in favor of Zach Thompson, Iowa State Forest Green Grizzlies down one, two.
Isaac pulls a second down, selects down.
He got the choice.
Hey, set, Red.
Here's where he needs to fight.
Fight hard.
Come out for an escape.
Right, Dan?
We need to keep that right.
Time off there and stay in the match.
This next flurry here in the next minute or so is going to be real crucial for Iowa and it's crucial for Iowa State.
Try to get some bonus points from Zach Brand, £187.
It's the second period between Iowa State.
Zach Thompson, good shot by Thompson in Iowa Ryan Folsom referees he's very Thompson's controlling the Underhook that's a better position here and it makes the Hawkeyes forces look bad head down and referee's a factor in this match.
So far it's been a warning and a stall call and control the head and the underhook on.
I'll take care of Ryan forces state champion out of iowa.
Let's go to jim Gibbons minute.
Well the matchups here, you know body styles is just probably perfectly set up for both sides.
But if you look at forces, his left arm, he just continually takes the outside position and and there's really no control there.
So but I also see something out of Thompson here.
He looks more little more aggressive than what I've seen him out of in the last year here, coming into half shots and circling and moving and not just standing still.
And I agree.
And Zach, he's been way more aggressive than he normally is.
I think that NCAA runner up it's helped his confidence that in a sense that, hey, I am the man right here.
I have all the confidence in the world from 5 to 3 and a half shots in favor of Zach Thompson.
30 seconds left in the second period.
Coach Solecki, it's important for him to stay competitive here to bring this young man along.
But same time, Iowa State needs to try to lengthen their lead here.
So that's crowd starting to get into a little bit.
They're starting to feel that force.
This is kind of holding his own a little bit here.
You got to give credit to him for allowing the crowd going this long to keep the crowd in it, right?
Yeah, he has.
It's 5 to 3 and there's a schedule.
We got December ten and Sunday afternoon live, Iowa, northern Iowa, Oklahoma State and Iowa State, Oklahoma and Iowa State, Minnesota and Iowa.
And I have a confidence in the Iowa conference, a great schedule this year.
And here we are in the third period at £197 between Zach Thompson and Ryan's process, Iowa State versus Iowa and the Hawkeyes lead 13, 11 and 13 score.
But the Iowa State wrestler, they're in the red.
Zach Thompson, runner up last year in the NCAA race.
That's big, big right there just from the standpoint that, you know, the third period last week against Munoz from Oklahoma State, he was falling all over and didn't do anything.
But he's at least thinking about being aggressive.
That's got to be a coaching plus four for Coach Zaleski.
But that was not good tactic.
They're going to give up a reversal.
It was a little soft, wasn't he?
Forces as well.
He didn't my him up and a bad position there, but he's still getting right on time.
That's what's amazing.
You go out of bounds, it'll be a point escape and they'll stop the right time.
6 to 3 now.
No writing time involved.
It's three point lead for Thompson, the heavy favorite here.
Like we said, NCAA runner up.
But the Iowa wrestler Brian forces going after him now.
He started this match and then he gets real crucial for Iowa in the future.
Big Thompson is still coming fourth, and I think that's a good sign that he's still been being aggressive, which is something that is a trait that he hasn't had as much as Coach Douglas would like to see him.
Come on.
Is that under control?
Is this a waste?
A lot of time, a high crotch, but no penetration of it.
Senior versus the freshman here, 6 to 3 lead for the senior Iowa State.
Zach Thompson.
Good warning against Zach Thompson.
That's big too, just from the coaches point of view from Iowa, just to see that they can bring their athlete along he's a freshman who is a shot by the freshman now now he's working them off.
If he takes a couple more shots, he could get caught and get a call here that would really be big.
Just Miss Hardaway, Iowa State starter, he got the call and then obviously he's coming in here.
That's not a win.
Right?
But it's it's progress last week but it's big win for Iowa State to keeping this beat Iowa State Zach Thompson wins at 197.
The score six four over Ryan Falls says he's not happy with himself like to finish strong.
Well we're going right into another it's 14 to 13 now.
Iowa State takes its first lead of the night and they're going into another match where they are favored.
But Ryan forces twin brother Randy Folsom, both from Ridgeway, Iowa, Decorah High School.
We see the second force that's coming out on second opportunity as an underdog here to make a difference for the Hawkeyes.
CAIN Our Mark Cain, our real tough heavyweight here, wants to make a statement for the Cyclones.
Lots of shooting.
He likes to go upper body as well.
The block in there, you know, he's there.
But the blast thrusters really like to double unders.
You know, he's going to get called here if he doesn't move out of there.
His boys have not got to learn how to keep their elbows in their schools.
House boys in an hour didn't call him there, but he gets in there again.
He'll call him Mark Cain, our from Avalon, Wisconsin, Milton High School, a junior here at Heavyweight for the Cyclones and Randy Forces freshman redshirt freshman out of the corps high school can always wrestle different than he did when he wrestled Hannah always just kind of everybody with hand in and he's doing some more shooting here and there's a good shot right down easy but he had kept his forward motion going knocking over immediately looking for the fall.
He's in that situation where it's been a lot of pressure there on top.
He's probably about £20.
Yeah, the bigger guy, not that big, that bruiser Russell aren't big heavyweights.
I know he's not a big heavyweight either.
And there's a tight back cradle that did a good job of coming out of there and stay back there on the edge.
Out of bounds, still down.
There's a shot like an Oreo when he comes.
Instead of stopping, he pushes in that weight, comes right off of him and see how he feels at the end.
That's a real crucial for technique.
You're listening to Dan Gable describing take out a mock ten, our heavyweight from Iowa State, who's ahead 2 to 1 after escape.
Was that a skateboard tension release?
I didn't see.
It makes a difference sometimes.
Kind of half and half.
There's a lock shot and just from there.
And look at this.
Oh, yes.
Does he have the heck this?
Wow, That's some wrestling there.
I'm saying both guys were I put shoulder a little bit.
Both guys were up teetering.
Teeter three.
It'll be interesting to see how conditioning comes into this one with that kind of action.
I don't think anybody else was looking for that.
He just had a fight out of it, actually.
And he did a good job of fighting out of it in our first got some good upper body twist.
Yeah.
Both up the right here and it was a good call right on the line there just I hope it's on the line it's out of bounds at that call.
Mike Allen, referee, longtime Waterloo, Iowa.
Long time referee and he keeps the action going and he has tonight it's 14 to 13 teams score Iowa State over Iowa after seven matches.
Oh, boy, that's a tough situation for him.
But he can't he's got to fight out of that.
There's a warning to the crowd like that warning.
It's been quite a bit of action here, actually, just burying his head a little bit.
Both wrestlers looked a little heavy footed, but he's having the feet right now.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
He's with Cale Sanderson.
Thanks, TJ.
I've got Carl Sanderson here.
He's two time NCAA champion.
Got a big ball tonight here for the Cyclones.
Yeah, I knew that the team race is going to be close and any extra points will really help out.
Are you working a little bit more on your balls this year?
Not intentionally.
I'm just.
I mean, it's just kind of happened.
I usually try and score as many points as I can.
Regulations.
Thank you, Jim.
Thank you, Carl.
Here we have a very active heavyweight matches, 2 to 2.
Mark, can our Randy forces you know, Dan, Randy just saw his brother stay in a match and compete.
What kind of psychological advantage does that make to for him?
I think it's I think it's real crucial that that his brother does that for him.
He's I think he's the the the older of the two by a few seconds.
So he probably looks up to him a little bit.
Well, right now, I think conditioning will have something to do with this match and he's Randy forces in.
Oh, boy.
I tell you, it's great match here.
Quite a match here.
Quite a match.
Both wrestlers are doing a good job.
Wow.
Wow.
I know.
Points.
Great action.
That was good wrestling.
One guy had it in, the other guy, then the other guy, then back and forth.
Crowd likes it.
Crowd likes that they like good wrestling indicators.
Look for their buddy here to come in.
What do they want to see kind of action.
Dan Gable likes it.
We all like it.
It's Iowa State versus Iowa.
It's the heavyweight match.
It's match of the night.
Know coaches that are that are there.
You've got to watch this kind of match.
It's it's the kind of give people up to the want to come back and you stand out there in the 2467 minutes you're not helping our sport.
Our sport is important, you know, for the advancement right now, the greatest activity, 48 seconds and Randy forces from Iowa and Mark Gonzalez from Iowa State are creating this activity right now in the middle of Carver Hawkeye Arena.
He's not moving his legs real well, but Cannonier seems to be a little bit out of position as well and fatigued.
I'm not sure what's going to happen here.
It's it's quite a scramble back up and there's a knee.
What's the knee there?
That's a bad situation.
Oh, he caught his knee, popped his knee, told the watch there.
We have 21 seconds left In the first, second period and it looks like he popped, but it's going to be okay.
Well, he has an injury.
Well, if it if it if it popped right here, it's going to be okay to probably finish the match, but it's probably going to be injured.
He'll be difficult, have a difficult time in the near future.
Trainers looking at it and they'll take a no takedown.
So far.
Oh, he called it he called the injury before the takedown.
So it's still to so he blew the whistle when he screamed and so he felt it.
Yeah.
That I there's another shot that's coming out of it.
I'm sorry.
He's doing a good job of it, but he's.
Oh, boy.
I tell you, this is quite a scramble.
These guys, I tell you, there's been some I don't know who's Tiger.
I'm not sure a people are having a good time.
Here is what it's all about.
It's a great match to watch from the standpoint whether you're a cyclone or a Hawkeye year, pass the scramble, the video ability of two heavyweights brought us into it.
We're in the third period in the heavyweight match.
Iowa State versus Iowa.
It's Randy forces from Iowa tied with Mark Canalys from Iowa State.
Two, two, two, one period laughs and the score is Iowa State 14, Iowa 13.
And after this match, there's only two matches left.
It's a close win and it's an exciting match right now?
He's not a bad writer, but he's going to let him go.
Wow.
I don't know.
I would have let him go in the house behind Penn's on whose I could move their feet here.
I think they're can move their feet to the best.
I think we'll have a better opportunity to win this match here.
Wow, wow, wow, wow.
No place, no point.
There's two points.
Head, butt heads, snap my shirt.
This match is not over 10 hours.
He's fighting with you not only for the meet, but he's fighting for his own pride.
And the score.
4243.
Randy forces crowds on their feet and know what they're looking for every time.
That's what they're looking for.
All the crowd doesn't like it, but it's a pretty partizan crowd here.
Oh, it's a little yes.
He goes off a shot, head shots, he gets a good angle, Just keeps with it, keeps with it, keeps with it and is up for the takedown.
Kind of a head snapping off a shot 45 yards as we sit here, we have our next match is Lyme, Iowa, versus northern Iowa.
Sunday, December 10th.
That's this Sunday at 2 p.m.. Iowa Television College Wrestling, one of six big college wrestling 2001 meets.
And then we go Oklahoma State and Iowa State.
Oklahoma, the Iowa State Iowa conference championship some of the best division three wrestling in the nation and then Minnesota at Iowa two in the big college wrestling season.
We're just getting started.
Jim Gibbons, what do you think's going on here?
Well, Tim, I've seen this operation before and sets twins come up here and set the pace as youngsters and they have brilliant careers after that.
So maybe we're watching the same thing going on the other day.
Whoa, look at this little muscle reversal.
40 seconds left In the third period, the score flies in the face of Iowa State's mark towered over the Iowa Hawkeyes.
He's got a chance to reverse them.
It's going to be tight here.
Well, he's going to get back points or not.
He's got back points.
No, he only got one now.
He's got back points.
Got it turned around for mark our mark in our out.
Big turnaround with that leg in.
Now he's looking for the ball and he's got 10 seconds Not going to get the ball but he's going to get the victory the victory crowd the real estate that injury time.
They didn't like the eight two, four, eight before the match goes to Iowa State Smart can hour makes the score Iowa State 17 Iowa 13 two matches to go here carbon Parker knocks there's one tire dude right there but I tell you he got a little energy there and he did what he had to do 1713 after eight matches, he lost his hips on the return to the mat, which gave him a good switch.
But the leg in and looking for the near fall, the power to power.
NELSON runs downhill happy here.
They didn't like that at injury time, but hey, that's part of the rules.
Here we come with Jody stripped matter from Iowa at 125 versus 240.
He's in on a single leg right away.
Iowa State has not done well so far this season at this weight class.
This is a different athlete than they've had this year.
I don't think he's probably out there to.
It's Jacob Moore, the Iowa state athlete he's up against Jody stripped matter strip matter of course third last year in the NCAA.
Pretty frustrating to wrestle because of his length and he he's on fire and I hear the Iowa State team yelling fight they want to fight out of the guy they want.
Good Well just like Iowa saw, the force as twins do.
Zach And that's what you're looking for when you're right.
Jacob Moore, Freshman Chaska, Minnesota High School True freshman going against to go to strip now they can strip matter ranked number two in the country last match.
Now Robinson is giving it a little warning.
Just a warning.
The battle bench looks like he got a little hot up.
Talk to how came over talk and talk.
Yeah, and probably did just like you said, Dan didn't do it in the right way.
Well, what was he probably talking about?
What you about.
But the break there.
Yeah.
And it's the rules.
Yeah, it's the rules.
And that doesn't matter.
Street matter needs to tend to business here to put the Hawkeyes back in contention here And obviously Iowa State Smith looking for a big, big match out of the young professional strip matters a senior out of Evan's burg Pennsylvania Cambria Heights and then Pittsburgh Johnstown Division two champion Morris Brown for them twice before he then transferred to Iowa and went into the NCAA, ranked number one in the nation, finished third.
There, he gets another takedown for six two and favors of that over more.
You know, last week he was in the similar situation down Oklahoma State had to have a fall and he got to go down rolling the whole first period.
But he had 2 to 1.
And he's I, I think the coaches were upset with him just because they wanted to get more wide open.
Russell in that first period and he he's done that this this particular match three takedowns in the first period for Jody stripped matter the score six to the team score after eight matches is Iowa State 17 Iowa 13 Iowa heavily favored in the last two matches.
As Dan Gable says, they just need to take care of business and they like being at Carver Hawkeye Arena.
That's where we're at when they need to take care of business.
Well, Jergens had to come down to heavyweight last week, or I should say his match is heavyweight and same thing this time.
So as the Beatles, no defeat in wrestling this year, though.
So, you know, that's one of those things that trouble you know it's Coach Douglas was talking about how he thought he could, you know, win at that particular weight.
Well, at this weight, £125.
Carver Hawkeye, Iowa Iowa State.
This Jody stripped matter from Iowa, leading Jacob Moore from Iowa State, 8 to 3 team score Iowa State 17 Isaac He's got him in 25 seconds.
Hey, Pendant, let's make the film.
I don't know.
We're kind of like fantasy through that half and half.
It's an important hitting combination.
Big fall for Iowa's Jodi Smith Matter Puts Iowa back in the league.
1917 one match left and that is defending national champion Eric German for Iowa.
Here's the replay circus has he has an armbar and a half and he just with the wrong way.
And there it is real quick.
And our barn half got all the way to the far side and is able to turn just like Sanderson on that up roll through half Really the only difference it made down, wouldn't you say, was just the score, because it really still comes down to whoever wins this match win.
And so the fall was a big lift for Iowa, but it didn't make any difference because as a veto wins Iowa State, Jergens wins Iowa, it comes down to the final match, Iowa, Iowa.
It's a great way to start college wrestling season.
We're at £133.
Eric Jergens, senior from Iowa versus senior Matt Acevedo from Iowa State.
You know, this is a big match for both teams.
But at the same time, this is of the defending national champion out there having lost in the late similar last week, somewhat.
You know, look, it's it's actually going to develop a guy like him just from that standpoint.
You know, they just put him in some situations that a lot of times heavyweights have to go in to go get it.
Yes.
They tried to muscle here.
And you try as if you don't want to.
Back to the center.
Eric Jergens, a senior from a Coke in Iowa, four time state champion, undefeated.
We've heard that before tonight, Nate.
We have all throughout the lineup, 144 no rear mark with 100 pins and now three all-American for the Iowa Hawkeyes and the defending national champion going up against Matt as of this transfer from Arizona State a couple of years ago.
Put down a weight is a good shot.
Real good.
By the way, talking under the court, he pleaded guilty right where he needed to hitting and it was an easy score, had to work hard on the setup.
Once the setup was there, just got to cut his head up to zero.
Yeah, you put up there, up, up you go up.
But a lot of pressure on the 45 was trying to do their game ice trying to get an ARMBAR but you got to watch it take a pass 90 obviously looking for the fall but I think he's you don't want to do it at the expense of an illegal type of situation as potentially dangerous to referees just watching it like they're supposed to let those things go a little more.
Now, one way better way is to take down the jergens right at the hip and at the knee and just immediately throw the ball because this just game inside right now.
There's a good mix and he got it didn't get the way.
See the right arms out there.
He needs to get a pivot point.
There's no pivot point with your arms out that work going there.
Jergens intent on working that Armbar right there.
It's four one now, two takedowns for Jergens, an escape for Acevedo.
Total dominance by Jergens so far in this match.
20 seconds left in the first match of the last hour.
First minute or a first period of the last match of the night, Iowa versus Iowa State.
It's got some right time.
It's a minute 15 right time as well.
Just tough out, crucial point, the time of the match right here, 3 seconds and Jergens brings it home and they had 4 to 1.
And Jimmy Gibbons has a guest.
Okay, Jim.
Okay.
I got Jodi's strip matter here with me here.
Jody, a good match out there, showed some experience on your feet, then went right for the fall.
Yeah.
Lately I've been, you know, getting on top and just grinding guys and having trouble, you know?
So, you know, I'm going to go on my feet and wear them out and then, you know, go for the pin after that.
Yeah, well, good must feel good to get a good big a lot of team points out there with the ball.
Yeah.
You know I should have been doing that last week, you know, we'd be undefeated then.
Congratulations.
Back to you, team.
Well, thank you.
And it sounds like he's heard the coach's message.
Dan, you know, here he has certainly heard what they had to say.
He knows what he has to do and a little little down on himself for not accomplishing it last week.
But he came out and went to business tonight, four to 6 to 3 and five.
They're looking pretty strong in this match as the Beatles kind of given up in some situations there that Jergens not quite has the domination yet.
He's it gives up before probably is going to get danger.
He feels like he's in danger and so he gives up the two instead of the two and two and two and three or whatever.
Jergens is probably also Redeem game itself a little bit from last week, too.
He's dropped in the rankings.
That young man has moved into the top spot rankings.
Walker from Oklahoma State Charles Walker, who upset Jergens last week at Oklahoma State to help the Cowboys give Iowa their first defeat in a long time.
I'll tell you what.
Hey, he's going for it.
You can't.
You know you can't.
You can't fault him for that.
He's going for a going for the unfortunately dangerous.
There they go back.
It's ten for the four of Jergens.
I think you gotta look at the rulebook on that one potential dangerous error and that's what Coach Zaleski mentioning to Mike Allen, the referee.
Well, they just take Martin, who's the chairman of the Rules Committee, says we got to let the fans go a little bit long enough.
Obviously, he saw an injury situation and you don't want to have somebody injured, especially this time of the year.
And you make a good point there.
And that might have come to to play.
25 seconds left in the second period here at £133, the last match of the evening, Iowa State, it's Eric Jergens from Iowa.
I had 10 to 5 over man.
You know, he's yeah, he's really doing a good job of controlling the ties.
And that's actually what Doug what Coach Douglas said he needed to control the ties to be able to go with Jergens.
But I don't think he realized that Jergens was going to be able to Manhattan in some situations like the end of the second period.
Score 12 five in favor of Jergens going in the last period now where Carver Hawkeye Arena big crowd tonight Iowa Iowa State there's Eric Jergens Matt Acevedo, £133 US the score Iowa 19 Iowa State 17 Jergens out to a commanding lead with one period left a win for means a win for the Hawkeyes over the Iowa State cyclones.
There you go.
It is a nice little role reversal there.
It gets a little bit high still, right?
Still good right time.
And there's going to be a reversal by Jergens.
Who more is working to by some of the fans will match is over The match isn't over till it's over a reversal in a pin down but Iowa state on top that some people probably argue that well you never know when some are going to get over and man yeah I've we've heard that lately.
Nobody's leaving early.
They're the ones that Iowa Iowa State 1917 in favor of Iowa over the cyclones a minute left with the score.
Eric Jergens, 14.
Matt as of 805.
And if it holds this way, Iowa will win.
Yeah, you got one for rock.
It has a red, northern, northern, northern.
I want to bring something to it.
Who they get that pointed to Jergens but Bobby Douglas coming up to put on Mike Allen and see what happened.
Chin chin chin position Chin position throughout this man's coach Matt, as a bit of luck, this hand was near the bottom.
Illegally in position is no chan was oh he was right them.
I'm not sure what that was about first.
No I yeah Jergens taking care of business.
Good thing that wasn't a close match that that happened right there.
I don't know exactly what happened there but at 15 to 6 points, Jergens looking for a takedown.
Now, once those ones 40 seconds left will make an with the point danz making was it appeared Matt as Vito was on the bottom got called for locking his hands and that's impossible to be done right.
Yeah so there's a little confusion there.
But things have changed where there was an escape by Acevedo and then two points takedown for Jergens, another escape for Matt Azevedo, two more takedowns for Jergens, 19 to 17.
He's looking like he's a national champ of this match because he's Russian, the guy that's ten off and as a Beatles run, Russ hustling back there.
But he's just not been able to stay up with it.
Arsenal for the national champion SEALs the deal for the Iowa Hawkeyes.
Final score 20.
That's a four point victory there.
23.
Iowa 17.
Iowa State, Big crowd, big way to start the season.
Iowa wins.
Tommy Brands, Olympic champion looking at Eric Jergens wants to be a two time NCAA champion coming off of defeat last week, first time since the Nationals, his sophomore year.
And that's the way you come back, isn't it, Dan?
You can either hang your head or you can do it right now.
You the Eric Jergens?
Yeah.
He woke him up a little bit, I think.
And I saw him in the mall the next day and he was kind of hanging his head a little bit.
But, you know, the way I look at it, I'd be disappointed if they weren't extremely disappointed.
And it's just as long as they don't hang their head out here.
And right now, I think that's some big matches for both sides that young kids, people that Bobby's trying to bring, people that coach, unless he's trying to bring along both forces, represented themselves real well.
Let's go to Jim Gibbons.
Thanks, T.J..
I've got the winning coach here, Jimmy Zaleski.
And as we said in the break here, you won the toss up matches and you really your guys went out there and competed pretty well and really entertaining me.
Know, it was real hard fought me, you know, I mean, Ohio State's got some big guns, you know, and some gamers, you know, And then they throw in a line like Haskell and Sanderson.
They knew it had to score big points.
They did.
And we got some guys, you know, I knew we had to score big points.
And that's a tossup match as it was.
We know we're going to be hard fought.
Tough for me.
Just tell Chip.
Well, I tell you what, it's a it's off to you.
And I hear now you got you and I on Sunday.
And tell us what you can look forward with them.
Well, I think, you know, I know it's another interest state meet.
So everybody you and I would get up for it.
We got to get back up for it.
So I look for another entertaining meet up here.
Congratulations, Jimmy.
Yeah, back to you, T.J.
Thank you, Jim.
We're at a big crowd here tonight at Carver Hawkeye Arena, where Iowa won again over Iowa State.
Have not lost a dual meet since 1987 to the Cyclones.
Last year, Iowa finished first in the NCAA, Iowa State second, a close second, both again going to vie for that NCAA championship.
And yet the upper hand in the dual meets has been has gone the way of the Iowa Hawkeyes.
And here in a very partizan and at times a very lively match.
Iowa wins 2317.
And Jim Gibbons is with the the coach of the Iowa State Cyclones Bobby Douglas.
Thanks, T.J.
I got Bobby Douglas here.
Bobby, is are all entertaining you.
I think your guys went out and scrapped pretty hard 23 to 17.
You got to feel good about what you're seeing here at this point in the season.
We can take home a lot of positives.
Jim.
I think the guys wrestled.
Well, we're in pretty good shape.
We've got some work to do if we're going to beat the Hawks and we plan on getting the work done.
All right.
Well, good luck the rest of the way out.
Thanks.
Well, you know, Bobby Douglas, what I always see is he always tries to see the positive side of whatever competitive situation he's been in and says he's got work to do, but he feels good about it.
Dan and do you see the same thing?
I certainly do.
I don't think this was the same team that went down to Oklahoma last week for Iowa.
You know, based on the way Coach Solecki talked about the kids were fighting, that wasn't the case here.
And that gives that that gave them the win.
Have they wrestled competitively?
Not competitively.
They would have lost this me because State was very competitive and Coach Douglas is pointing that out.
Well, putting this in perspective to look at the score, that's one match difference.
If either of those two matches, 49 or 74 would have gone the other way.
We have a tie.
Me?
Yeah.
I really think that McMahon was really the guy that sparked them on because I know they talked about, you know, parts of being up very much improved and, you know, I just felt like he dominated.
Yeah.
Yes, he did.
I mean, there really wasn't any doubt from the start.
I never saw Perry Parks get into it at all.
He had some good scrambles there.
But McMahon he had the upper defensive scrambled and then, of course, Mike Shattuck winning that in the final moments of the match.
And I won 49 against Billy Maldonado.
That was big.
They were evenly matched.
Douglas Zaleski right there, ready to go, ready to go.
And his dad, Windsor, another meet.
There's a TJ Williams and Ben Sherk.
Is that right?
That's in there.
Luke used us.
He's just he weighed in at 125 then wrestle.
All right.
Well, TJ Williams comes away with a win as does six of his teammates and we had some good game matches from the wrestlers that even lost of course us twins what about them.
Yeah I think they made big improvement last week as far as the zip code Solecki and coach brands.
What we'll be talking about based on what I understand what hear they just you know, they didn't they didn't fight hard and they fought hard.
In fact, it looked like that the heavyweight was going to potentially win that match.
But can I pull it out?
Well, it started out with Doug Schwab and it ended up with Eric Jurgens, two national champions.
Iowa wins it 23 to 17.
That's the final score.
